Sri Lankan golf in Green Valley Club

SriLankan Airlines will sponsor its first golf tournament in the Kingdom - the Thailand Golf Classic - at the Green Valley Country Club, Bang Na, on September 6.

Published on July 28, 2007

The winners will be eligible to represent Thailand and compete in the 12th SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic, which will be held at one of the world's most beautiful golf courses, the Victoria Golf and Country Resort in Sri Lanka from October 10-13.

SriLankan Airlines, which is sponsoring the tournament in association with the Green Valley Country Club, said the event was open to all golfers, who have to pair with a golf buddy. The winning pair under the 'four ball best ball' system will travel to Kandy, Sri Lanka, courtesy of the airline, and compete in the 12th SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic.

Hussain Jayah, the country manager of SriLankan Airlines, said the competition was unique and would provide contenders an opportunity to prove that they deserve to represent Thailand.

"Last year, a Thai golfer outshone more than 180 international players from around the world and took first place. He was the first Thai golfer to win in this prestigious tournament since its inception 12 years ago. We are hoping that Thai golfers prove they have what it takes to follow in the footsteps of last year's winner," Jayah said.

Maximum handicaps of 16 and 18 will apply for men and women players respectively. Tournament participants will be divided into two flights. Flight A will have players with handicaps up to nine.

The winning pair will get two SriLankan golf packages and the chance to compete in the 12th SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic.

Flight B will have players with handicaps between 10 and 16 (10-18 for women) and the winning pair will get two return air tickets Bangkok-Sri Lanka.

The entry fee is Bt2,000 per person, which includes greens fee, caddy fee and a buffet lunch.

As a special incentive, SriLankan Airlines will offer special discounts on golf packages that will allow participants to witness and compete in the 12th SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic.
