But maybe after 3 months I thought I figured it out. And then later, maybe after 3 years I thought I really know Thailand. Now, after almost 30 years, I know most symptoms, but still have limited insight about Thais. I know very few westerners who have a deep understanding of Thais and Thailand, very few.

Oh boy, haven't run into one of these nutters in Thailand in well over 30 years. I thought the deluded foreigner thinking he's "gone native" was now a thing of the past. 1 1

I have hope you will. Where does your understanding of Thai people and culture come from? Years of theoretical study, are you maybe a famous SE-Asia history professor? Or do you have a 6th and maybe 7th and 8th sense and just know what is going on, because you are the man? Please elaborate. 1 1

They used to live in small local style apartments, eat mainly street food, try and speak only Thai, dress in locally made clothing, try to avoid any venues where other foreigners might go, etc. Then they would act as if other foreigners were trying to steal their newfound sanctuary by coming here. Wore Buddhist amulets. They also believed locals were smarter and superior in every way. It was a strange phenomenon. Almost fundamentalist. I think people who become disenfranchised with their own culture and societies are prime candidates for "going native syndrone". 1 1

SportRider
First time I saw a ladyboy was in the early 90's in the bar at Grand Hyatt, Jakarta. My first trip to Asia. Work colleague and I were sitting at the bar, watching another westerner be seduced by the LB and ultimately leave with her. The next night the guy was back at the bar, my friend said to him 'do you know what you took last night?'. The response 'Mind your own effing business.' Not a sucker. Knew it. I asked him if he had sex and he wouldn’t answer which I found strange Enjoy your trip partner Considering that all your friend was looking for was a set of breasts and to get off ladyboys give just as good a bj as any lady.

I agree But I have to admit that when I arrived in Thailand, to live here, I also thought I would integrate with Thais like equals. Some time later I realized that just doesn't work. I will always be an outsider, it doesn't matter how much I try. So I stopped trying. I live the way I like together with my Thai gf. We do "Thai things" together and more western things. And sometimes she visits her family to have a Thai only environment, and I go out with western friends, eating western food, etc. We are not same. But we can and do live in peace together, sometimes doing the same things together, and sometimes doing different things. That's life for farangs in Thailand. For me it's ok like that - and I know I can't change it even if I wanted to. 1

Possibly just over thinking it a bit. Most of what they do is to protect personal interests or elevate themselves in their Thai social standing. It's the driving force for most things, including religious practices, gift giving, etc. Sadly it's mainly driven by superficial and financial aspirations.
