Filling jobs Thais would not take..why not just ease on cross-border national work like the EU did ?

All these people will be devastated losing their jobs with families back home..they are contributing to the Thai economy through work - if not through a lot of money.

 

Just regularise them.

Can't they all just enroll on a cooking class and get the DTV visa?

How is it a ridiculous statement?  If a business cannot afford to pay the salaries of legal workers and can only survive by using illegal labour and paying them a pittance, then it is not a viable business model.

In many areas of Thailand the legal minimum wage is between 300 and 400 Baht per day, which is what they're paying their Burmese workers. They're not trying to get away with paying less than that, however many Thai workers will not accept that wage for really hard work, and they're forced to hire immigrants, whether they're illegal or not.

 

That is precisely why your statement was so ridiculous and ignorant of the facts and the reality on the ground, at the same time.

There is no legal minimum wage for illegal workers.   If the amount they wish to pay does not meet the expectations for legal workers then they are not paying enough.  If the business cannot afford to hire workers for the "going rate" for that kind of work then my point still stands - it is not a viable business.  

 

No business is "forced" to hire immigrants.   It's always a choice, and when it comes to hiring illegal workers, it's typically an exploitative one.

Well you are making a lot of assumptions, and your primary assumption is that there are plenty of legal workers available, which is often times not the case. That does not simply apply to Thailand, this is a worldwide phenomena.

Maybe they they don't need cheap labour to survive but they do use illegal cheap labour because they are Greedy/Money Hungry.
