Price of beer in Bangkok

But how do you compare supermarket/ 7eleven prices with a hotel or restaurant bar in an area with some of the most expensive property in Thailand.

They do operate ++, plus service, plus tax which puts 17% on top. Not a practice I like at the retail level, all prices should be inclusive.

This aircon resto that charges 45 for a small can of Chang, you do not state the location or whether it is a happy hour price.

Opposite my home is the Old English Pub in Thonglor where they charge happy hour prices of 45 baht a pint of draught Leo (before 2pm) rising to 85 a pint before 7pm. But these prices are very, very much the exception in central Bangkok.

I prefer to compare like with like.

The restaurant is near Surin and owned by my lady . Her beer prices are constant I.e. small Chang / Leo 45 baht , large bottles are 70 baht . In Bangkok , my hotel was charging 90 baht for a small Chang and around the corner the bars were between 120-150 baht for the same . So 7-11 comparisons are not needed . I guess that the guys on holiday for a couple of weeks think that the bar prices are similar to their own countries and so no problem but long term farang residents understand that the Bangkok bars are overcharging with a mark up of 400% or more .

  • High rent , yes I get that but when you consider that a box of 24 Chang works out at 33 baht a bottle and a bar wants on average 130 baht a small bottle , that is 400 % profit .That is excessive but a

I don't drink Leo, whatever that is. I prefer a craft beer or a fine sparkling wine.

True but surely you have considered that Sukhumvit overheads are higher than "near Surin".

When I was first here in Oct 97 earlyish in the currency crisis, I quickly sussed out that in general central Bangkok prices were at least on a par with Central London prices, if not higher.

There are cheaper places about, the Bus Stop bar in Soi 4 comes to mind (not an aircon bar) can't quote prices for there or anywhere as I've not drunk for over 3 months and not much for a month or two before that.  Old age and Ill health.
