In a tragic case of mistaken identity, a 25-year-old man was shot and killed in the forest near Ban Nongsim, Na Haeo District, Loei Province. The incident occurred around 10:30 on September 7, when local police received a report of a fatal shooting in the Ang Taek community forest, located approximately 3 kilometres from the village.

 

Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered the lifeless body of Wuttinan (surname withheld), a resident of Ban Nongsim. He was found lying on his back in a crevice between rocks, dressed in a green t-shirt, black sweatpants, and boots. The victim had been shot once in the back of the neck with a .22 caliber rifle. A shotgun was found next to his body, which authorities collected as evidence.

 

 

The shooter, identified as 46-year-old Nattapol (surname withheld), also from Ban Nongsim, immediately surrendered to the police at the scene. He handed over the rifle used in the shooting, which was equipped with a scope, along with over 20 rounds of ammunition. Police secured the weapon and arrested Nattapol while the victim's body was taken to Na Haeo Hospital for an autopsy.

 

During questioning, Nattapol explained that he had gone out early in the morning, around 03:00, to tap rubber trees. Unaware that the victim was also in the forest, Nattapol saw movement near the rocks about 20 metres away. Mistaking the figure for a civet, a nocturnal mammal commonly hunted in the area, he fired a single shot through the scope of his rifle. Upon approaching the spot, he was horrified to find that he had fatally shot Wuttinan, a fellow villager. 

 

Panicked, Nattapol immediately notified the victim’s family, who then contacted the authorities. He did not attempt to flee the scene. The police have since charged Nattapol with "causing death by negligent use of a firearm," and further investigations are underway.

Yes hard to tell the difference init especially as tappers normally wear headlights.

What threat did he envision from a herbivore. More likely out poaching.

Civets, like all of the cat family, are carnivores.

We have some rubber tappers living in a shack close by and they frequently shoot guns at any time of the day. Reputably they use yaba.

Not according to my google search. Maybe you should contact Wikipedia with your knowledge. I normally research any answer like that, I would give. Maybe you should too.

So, if you were a mind reader and that's the animal the killer had in mind when he killed the other guy then we were both wrong. It's an omnivore.

20 metres away using a scope he couldn't identify the target as a human... but still pulled the trigger.

Mistaken another hunter for a game While He Was Carrying A Rifle With An Optical Sight?

Sound very strange.

Power of that scope is unsure.

But must be easy to tell the man from a small animal with the magnified view.
