Does your Thai wife keep you on a short leash?
Thailand is a matriarchal society, something that the Thai menfolk don't openly admit too, but that's the way it is. I know in our house with the (slightly) extended Thai family, Yai may well be the boss, but my wife is the actual enforcer. It was like that before my father-in-law passed away too. I do the shopping and school runs (gets me out of the house). Regarding the earlier mention of forgiveness, I know my wife has that in spades. The things I used to think I was getting away with around the mid-marriage point should have seen me kicked to the curb. How does that saying go again? A man marries a woman for what she is, but a woman marries a man because of what he can be. She won. Talking of browbeaten American dads, I am not American but my friend and Godfather to my oldest boy is, and your mom sounds just like his mom. An outwardly pleasant lady who tends to go way off the rails, especially at Thanksgiving reunions (to which I was invited once), likes to 'tell it like it is' and berates her doting husband something awful. When she harangued my buddy as to why he was still single at 55, he told her because of what he saw her doing to his dad. No more Thanksgiving invites for us, for which we are eternally grateful! As for my symbiotic relationship, married 17 years with two kids here, I have found frequent separation keeps it all real and fresh. Although semi-retired, I still do what I used to do and work overseas two or three times a year. In fact, the longest time we continuously cohabited was during Covid and boy, was THAT an eye-opener. But the overseas interludes also work for my overall attitude to Thailand, and it's... unique issues (being polite here). In my fairly unremarkable and limited social circle up here in Isaan, I find the foreigners that moan longest and loudest about their lot and quick to denigrate the locals and blame everyone else for everything, are the ones that haven't left the country in years. Some probably haven't even left the province. Good luck with your mountain Sabbatical, and I hope that it works in ultimately keeping you together for longer. -

Thai military faces renewed bribery allegations involving US firm
Allegations of transnational bribery involving the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) have resurfaced, prompting responses from top officials. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai acknowledged the persistent issue, stating that bribery has long plagued the military. “It’s been around for a long time.” Phumtham, addressing the recent claims of kickbacks allegedly paid by a US company to the RTAF, admitted he has yet to examine the details of the latest allegations, adding that his immediate focus is on directing military relief operations for flood victims in the north and northeast regions. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has committed to investigating reports suggesting that Deere, a US-based agricultural and construction equipment firm, paid bribes to secure contracts with the RTAF, the Department of Highways (DoH), and the Department of Rural Roads. This commitment from the NACC follows Deere’s agreement to pay US$9.93 million (approximately 336 million baht) to settle charges by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The charges indicated that Deere’s Thai subsidiary, Wirtgen Thailand, bribed state agencies to win procurement contracts. The NACC highlighted that this case of international bribery is of significant public interest. The commission is actively gathering information and coordinating with the SEC to ensure thorough investigation and prosecution of any officials found to have accepted bribes. RTAF chief ACM Panpakdee Pattanakul confirmed the RTAF’s awareness of the reports, noting that the alleged bribes were paid between 2019 and 2020. Yesterday, September 17, Phumtham emphasised the existence of agencies dedicated to handling corruption cases involving state officials and political office holders. The Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) deals with graft related to state officials, while the NACC addresses corruption among public office holders, reported Bangkok Post. “They must be given a free hand to do their jobs. The Defence Ministry will not interfere with the investigation process.” While addressing the broader issue of military procurement projects, Phumtham expressed uncertainty about continuing the initiatives started by his predecessor, Sutin Klungsang. He stated that procurement projects, including those for Gripen fighter jets and submarines, will be revisited after addressing the immediate flooding emergency. by Bright Choomanee Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-09-18 -

Exactly. Diet and exercise. For some people this will be enough, for others not. Do not hesitate to take prescribed medication if you fall into the latter group. -

Tourism Minister Aims to Levy 300-Baht Fee for Visitors
That will deter tourists coming not increase them coming on top of this the thai baht is very strong which effects tourist spending and will also have an effect on exports. In my humble opinion Thailand is heading for a financial crisis the personal debt of people is astronomical and I believe this 10,000 baht hand out to 30 million plus residents is one huge mistake and will come to bite the government in the backside ! -

Life isn't that simple. They're a lot of exterior, extraneous issues that we have little or no control over that can make our lives quite irritating and even miserable. The question is will you take action and change it? -
