A deadly landslide on September 13, struck the Mae Fa Luang district in Chiang Rai, claiming the lives of four people, including an 8-year-old girl. Over 150 houses were damaged , leaving the community in shock and grief.

The event occurred in the Maemao Village, Thoet Thai sub-district, where a massive landslide engulfed homes, one of which belonged to the family of young Sunattha, a local child who tragically lost her life. Her schoolteacher, Woww Natthipha, took to Facebook to express her sorrow, writing: "RIP Sunattha. My heart is shattered. She was a kind, cheerful child who greeted me every day and helped with everything. This is a loss no one wanted."

The landslide caused extensive damage to the area, rendering entire houses uninhabitable. Mae Fa Luang has been cut off, with roads and electricity out of service, leaving many without communication.

Reports indicate that 50 households remain trapped in the villages of Thoet Thai, Akhu, and Chateet. Among the damaged areas, Maemao reported 33 destroyed homes and 1 death, Pajee saw 1 death but no destroyed houses, and Nator reported 35 damaged homes with 1 fatality. Other affected areas include Pang Mahan (15 homes, no fatalities), Mong Kao Lang and Mong Paed Lang (20 homes damaged), and Huamaekham (30 homes, 1 death).

Rescue and relief efforts are still ongoing, with access to the area extremely difficult.

This is a normally very attractive area in the mountains near Chiang Rai where tea and coffee plantations abound - especially at Doi Mae Salong.  I wish a speedy return to normality after the landslide devastation.
