My condo has an undercover parking garage and we have banned EVs from charging there. Apart from the massive insurance costs imagine if one exploded in the garage. Not only would it destroy most of the cars in the garage it would probably seriously damage the condos above, with possibly lethal consequences. Fire fighters would not be able to access the garage. Many countries, like South Korea, have done the same. The problem of course is that they can still explode just sitting there.

That reminds me of when I was a teenager and had a motorcycle. I modified the exhaust and air filter. That didn't make the bike faster, but with all that noise I was convinced it is a lot faster - and obviously more fun.

EV fires are a big issue. Obviously, you can decide to ignore information about those fires. But some of us like to remind the EV fanboys that there are significant risks.

Personally, I have no problem with electric vehicles in general. They certainly have advantages. But that fact should not keep us away from seeing also their problems.

no single ev owner denies or ignores that ev fires are harder to extinguish. but it is also a fact that evs catch fire much less

frequently than ice vehicles, something many ev opponents overlook. 

 

battery and ev manufacturers are working intensively to find solutions that minimize this problem.

i'm confident that even more improvements ( like LFP) will be made, in the near future!

nuclear power plants are not safe from natural disasters, wars, or human error. furthermore, the long-term storage of highly radioactive 

material is far from being resolved ... this is what personally concerns me more  .... as it seems to be an unsolvable problem.

yes taking the baffles out or at least cutting them in half and a new air filter made the bike go much faster (sound wise)🤣

BYD Seal Performance has an almost 50:50 weight distribution, 60% power bias to the rear wheels and 530hp and it’s easy to spit the back end out when you want. And an instantaneous throttle response which you cannot achieve with ICE.

 

And when you want silence you can have it.

Personally I would prefer to be in the middle of a modern nuclear power plant compared to in the middle of a lithium battery charging station - especially if the area of that charging station was never designed for that kind of use.

 

Personally, I don't have much hope that lithium batteries will be somehow safe in the future.

It all depends on the battery chemistry.  Lithium Iron Phosphate as fitted to BYD’s is much safer, punctured batteries peak at 60•C and don’t catch fire.

My 500+ bhp Subaru Impreza was the loudest thing I have ever heard. Screaming exhaust under acceleration, amazing whooshes and chatter from the external wastegate and blow off valve. I loved it. But all that noise is just inefficiency at the end of the day.

Drive a fast EV and it is intoxicating - much more so than my Subaru was with its massive turbo lag (I was running 2.0 bar on a huge IHI RX6 turbo), the wait while you changed down a cog or two, realistically a couple of seconds between wanting to go fast and getting the thump in your back. I have driven a 670 bhp Ferrari which made an amazing noise but still had a lag, albeit much less than my Subaru.

Try a fast EV with instantaneous response at all times and you soon realise that you don't need the noise. I love a good engine sound but once you have tried the alternative you realise it is not important and actually you come to appreciate the silence. And, as I said, the thrill is intoxicating. But you need to be a grown up with an open mind to try it and appreciate it, and unfortunately I don't think you qualify.

I used to have a closed mind on EVs and was occasionally guilty of using childish terms like "glorified washing machine", but then I thought I should try one before I criticise and my opinion immediately changed. And the same is true for my petrol head brother who now drives one and countless other people.

There are EV owners on here who have owned the most exclusive high performance exotic petrol cars and they wouldn't go back. I value their experience and knowledge much more than people like you who just throw out meaningless insults and - let's face it - very childish and pathetic memes, all based on zero knowledge or experience.

Oh, just realised this thread was supposed to be about condo charging. Why does every single EV related thread descend in to this? It always does. Do you people really not have anything better to do?

Imagine if Bangkok became fully EV overnight. It would be bliss. Would you miss the sound of old busses, of diesel pickup trucks, nasty rattling Fortuners, Everests and Pajeros, the sewing machine drone of the  CVTs of four pot Hondas or Toyotas?  Super loud modified tinny motorbikes? 

I own two petrol cars. One a horrid four cylinder CVT, one a peppy four cylinder turbo but still not an enjoyable noise. Why do I need that? It gives me no enjoyment, it is just noise.

Also not sure about V6s really. I owned one, it sounded OK but not special. I think the only really good sounding V6 was the NSX. I agree V8s generally sound good.

You can enjoy EVs but still like the sound of a high performance Ferrari or Lambo. But how often do you hear that? Hardly ever. There will always be a place for high performance petrol engined cars, why do you think liking EVs mean those will be wiped out? It is just stupid.

I just like to hear the engine and after racing motorcycles and spectating to hundreds of events ,how can you even watch ev racing?

I asked Juristic if I could install the 7.5kw permanently mounted charger that came free with the vehicle at one of the spots.  They said no.   No biggie, I installed the charger at work, BOI zone, company charges me 4baht/kwh, so they also make money.  I almost exclusively use this now as it is so incredibly cheap.

 

A few months ago the Condo installed Pupa Plugs from PEA, which are smart plugs with 15amp service, no app needed.  You simply scan QR code, enter phone number, input OTP they text to you, add money with QR code scan, tell how much money you want to use (7 baht/kwh), plug in your 'granny charger', and it all starts.  Webpage stays open on phone and tells you status and lets you stop charging if you want at any time.  Takes longer than just plugging in, but pretty easy compared to some other chargers, and NO STUPID APPS.   I would recommend this to any Condo Juristic office as it is easy, security guards have no extra work, no extra billing needed, all automatic, and just need the Pupa Plug box, which is very simple to install.  This is SLOW charging, though, have to leave overnight for any meaningful battery gains, which is totally fine for most usage.

Note that our parking is covered, but outside the building, not underneath.  A firetruck could drive right up to a burning car.

Also note that burning cars from slow 'granny' chargers like this would be borderline non-existent.  Your wife/girlfriend/kik's hairdryer probably uses more power.  I'd be much more worried about 20kw+ chargers which stress the battery/BMS a bit more.

 

Excellent post, great to hear from somebody who actually has direct experience of how to solve the problem.

Obviously, there are still questions how long they would last but I am sure that could be managed and improved.

Unfortunately, I guess it will take a long time before such things would be available in Thai fire stations.

And how many of them would be ready if they need them.

Maybe every condominium should have them stored near, but not too near, to charging stations.
