The Pink Panther

Featured Replies

I've just checked the film channels and the Pink Panther (remake) is on. These things really bother me. - Remaking classics. post-39032-1186238566.gif

It is so <deleted>. Made even worse by the actors involved. I remember Steve Martin playing some great roles (remember Rupret?), but this is beyond the shitest <deleted>.

Peter Sellers has been raped. It's a tragedy.

It's been really popular to remake classics over the last ten years. But this one could be the very worst. Although, there are others...

Question. Why have our good friends the Americans decided to pick on the UK classics??? You can't redo the Italian Job!!!

Are you serious? Hollywood did exactly that in 2003 with a big budget remake starring Mark Wahlberg, Donald Sutherland, & Charlize Theron. Of course, Wahlberg is no Michael Caine, but the movie was good mindless fun nonetheless.

However, regarding Peter Sellers, I agree completely. Nobody will ever be Clousseau but Sellers.

Edited, because, you know, Hollywood screwed up another classic ten years ago, remaking the Jackal starring Bruce Willis. Totally screwed up a great classic flick, "The Day of the Jackal" from 1973. Great movie worth picking up for 100 baht at the DVD sellers on the street in BKK.

Yes, a lot of the remakes are complete <deleted>. How about The Assassin - Point of No Return (remake of La Femme Nikita)?

Bridget Fonda couldn't act her way out of a McDonalds job if she was any less pretty...

I agree with you, but:-

How about her mother? Did you see Barberella? If they remade it then who could play her? Jessica Alba would be an obvious choice.

You can't, it's wrong. Some things are sacred.

(the origional ironic sarcasm perhaps didn't translate well in writing.)

I also hate remakes with a passion. Bought by accident the Hitchiker's Guide, not aware that it is not the original BBC series. but some Disney-style remake...total utter crap!!

There was that Danish movie Nightwatch in the 90s. The makers refused to sell the rights to Hollywood for a remake - I still tip my had for that decision! The movie was actually brilliant.

Further it annoys me that here in Thailand no one has heard of fine European flicks and actors ever...Belmondo for instance! Or Depardieu...the list is endless!

Well...if you hate French-influenced cheap remakes, you must REALLY hate another fairly recent Wahlberg film, the Truth about Charlie. This was the cheapest of all rip-offs of the classic 1963 film "Charade." Funny thing is that Charlie also had some really mindless, but enjoyable moments. Easy to please, that's what I am.

Sorry was "remade" with Ewen McGregor in the lead, however by original director.

I've found some re-makes to be better than the original, especially if the movie relied on SFX, which are now conciderably better than they used to be.

John Carpenter's 'The Thing' is one that springs to mind.

However, as Chinthee said, Sellers turned Clousseau into an icon....... it's always unwise to try to replace an icon.

That of course does not apply to James Bond or Dr Who.

Wasn't Spartacus remade a couple of years ago...

You can't do that, it's a classic. Thousands of sweaty men in the desert can't be beaten by SFX. Sorry, I feel like I'm taking this into the gay forum.

Songs too of course, but we mustn't start that up, and I certainly wouldn't mention things like Britney doing a Joan Jet copy (cover? nice name for a <deleted> idea..).

Though, for some reason Bowie songs tend to be covered really well.

Two others spring to mind

Get Carter very pedestrian remake

La Cage aux Folles the original was very funny - the remake just embarrassing

Blast - another one came into my mind while I was typing, disappeared again.

Scarface wasn't a bad remake. Changed out of recognition though.

i agree with you Jas,

notable exceptions are indeed the Pacino Scarface, which was just a defining movie of it's time - and in its own right.

The italian job... - Eh? I avoided even watching it for a year or two. But recently I did come across it and watched it. Taken by itself, it's a fun 90 mins of entertainment.

Peter Sellers IS Inspector Jaques Clouseau.

No amount of comedians can bumble around like Sellers could.

The storyline, the kato-friendship, the acting, and steve martin all contributed to making the 2005 version absolutely abysmal.

Who in their right mind would even attempt to do Clouseau, now?

Oh that;s right! Steve Martin! Yes, indeed, in recent news, Steve Martin began working with the production team of The Pink Panther sequel.

:o

What a huge ego that <deleted> must have. Stick to playing Rupret Mr Martin.

Why would they make another? Did they make money from the first one? If they did, it's a shocker. I suggest that we pool our skills and go into film production.

I was hoping we wouldn't have to mention Hanoi-Jane.

ouch! Thanks for the update...what a shame!

One interesting remake was The Ring with Naomi Watts. A great commercial and critical success, with a sequel made. But many say the original Japanese film was so much better and scarier.

Actually, when he played the character Ruprecht it was a remake of the 60's film "Bedtime Story"

As for calling him an egotistical <deleted>, I think you need to go sit in the shade and calm down a little. It's a movie. Don't take it so seriously. And above all, don't watch it.

Martin, aside from his acting and writing successes has helped launch the careers of many new talents, and has raised and personally donated millions of dollars to various causes. He's also one of the first to travel to war zones to entertain soldiers.

For an egotistical <deleted> he seems to be an alright guy.

For all you so-called defenders of all things Peter Sellers, you haven't even mentioned the most brilliant coup of his professional career. The subtle and brainy satircal comedy written by another genius, that capped his own genius career. Who can guess? If you haven't seen this one, you ain't caacaa.

hint. look at my user name comments.

I wasn't a big fan of any of the Pink Panther movies but Dr. Strangelove, The Mouse That Roared, and The Prisoner of Zenda were excellent.

I think you may be referring to the movie "the Party"

Yes Chinthee, "Being There" has to rank among the best films ever, and Sellers was just stellar in his performance.

Ahh yes of course "being there" - the scene of him walking on water - brilliant.

Keep your knickers on mate. This is a tounge in cheek thread...

I agree that it's iffy to do remakes. Not many are as good as the originals.

Ocean's 11 was a good remake but Ocean's 12 was a bit poo.

As for Pink Panther, stay away from trying to emulate Seller's, it's dooooooomed :o

You really should read Jersey Kosinski's book and you get a lot more insight into "Chauncey's" and Sellers brilliance. Turrets for the intellectual set.

I take it that you're an American...

<deleted> is not a strong word in English. It's like "silly bloke" or "fool" etc. It's not the same as c*%#, which it might be in American.

Egocentric. OK, an average (at times very good) comedian like Steve Martin thinks that he is good enough to do a Sellers remake. It's a <deleted> film. He then decides that, just like Sellers, he will do more. He is that good in his mind. It's called an ego problem.

So, you reckon that Steve Martin is a nice bloke and "does a lot of work for charity"... great. He might well be a nice bloke, I don't know. And, on this fun little thread we are considering film remakes and all things associated. We are not considering if this or that star is a nice bloke and does "a lot of work for charity"...

So, don't get your (under)pants in a twist, mate. :D
