spidermike007 Posted October 15 Posted October 15 It doesn't matter if it's legal or not, the real question here is why would you want to rent from somebody who has no interest in dealing with you? It's not like there's a shortage of supply here, there are so many apartments available, why not deal with somebody who's got a good attitude? 2
Bday Prang Posted October 15 Posted October 15 No point in worrying about the finer details like legalities, What are you going to do , launch an appeal campaign ? Just remember where you are, accept it for what it is and move on. there is no shortage of alternatives

jesimps Posted October 15 Posted October 15 I think a person should be allowed to do what they want with their own property. Thailand, thankfully, is not the UK.

With 100s of thousands of condos for rent, why pick probably the only one you can't have...stop being woke and trying to enforce your f@#ked up western ideologies on Thailand. Move on 1
Thingamabob Posted October 15 Posted October 15 It's legal. It only refers to foreigners, no specific race or religion.

Taco Posted October 15 Posted October 15 We have a gold shop in koh phangan that won’t allow Farang in. I always wondered if this was legal. Obviously the owner is stupid but curious if he is breaking any Thai law?

EU law relating to professional hosts may not apply here. By Kingdom of Thailand law, the majority of a buildings ownership is required to be owned by Thai citizens. So, foreign ownership must be kept at no more than 49%. Knowing this, and knowing of the relatively recent rush of Chinese, Russian, etc. condo purchases I would not suspect any discrimination other than that required by law.

Yagoda Posted October 15 Posted October 15 13 hours ago, brewsterbudgen said: Surely legal. UK law makes it very difficult to rent to foreigners who cannot prove their immigration status. Landlords can be prosecuted for renting to illegals. Maybe in Thailand it's just easier to rent to Thais. A Thai friend of mine from Florida refuses to rent her Bangkok condo to Thais.
impulse Posted October 15 Posted October 15 Sure beats renting to a foreigner, then not being able (or willing) to do the necessary immigration reporting.

Smokey and the Bandit Posted October 15 Posted October 15 So would it be legal for a condo owned by lets say an American, USA, who wanted rent it out, to state, NO RUSSIANS, or NO CHINESE!

black tabby12345 Posted October 15 Posted October 15 Thailand laws against social discrimination. When I checked it out with google, I found some information. Thailand 2007 Constitution - Constitute (constituteproject.org) While the system says it does not tolerate discrimination on the ground of gender, race, nationality, age etc.. people may still encounter with the invisible wall(prejudice). It is seen in many parts of the world(as most of you know). Not everyone complies with that what their rule says(until legally challenged and defeated). And what you saw could well be one of such cases. Even though that property own might have had some really bad experience with the people who are other than Thai national in the past...
john donson Posted October 15 Posted October 15 gypsy, no thank you, would not want that as a renter here either

Jumping from the balcony bloody mess outside, easily mopped up. Massacre on the premises, mopping insufficient. 1

Caldera Posted October 15 Posted October 15 They probably reckon that the number of foreigners they could attract is pretty low, not enough to make the administrative overhead worthwhile - TM30 notifications to immigration in particular.
khunPer Posted October 15 Posted October 15 23 hours ago, GypsyT said: EU law relating to professional hosts may not apply here. Exactly, this is Thailand, not EU... You might also see signs that specific nationals are not welcome and dual pricing, where foreigners pay double or (much) more. If you wish EU-rules to be enforced, remain staying in EU...
