Behave Malcolm you're not fooling me, those are not pics from a halloween party, I bet you took them last night at Angelwitch, I suppose looking on the bright side (for some at least) it is actually possible to enjoy halloween everyday.

I might move to Pattaya and start selling black lipstick , or maybe I can finally start to get rid of that job lot of Diane Abbott face masks I bought on the cheap, once I have modified them by removing all but the lips.   What do you reckon? a <deleted> from her would be pretty scary

I have a pic of my ex girlfriend celebrating Halloween in Bangkok in 2011, so it is not new.

Would that be the "highly educated non bar girl " you are always on about ?  She must also be years ahead of her time, was she celebrating it alone or were you involved too

Shortly to be followed by hookers in Santa clause costumes as Christmas approaches, then we need to wait until St Patricks day when the ever desperate bar owners will have their girls dressed up in green thinking it will increase sales,   St Patricks day is another non event that has fallen victim to the god of commercialism  just like "irish" bars

I took the photo. This was a relatively rich Canadian student, the educated one is my wife.

Ugly old women use black makeup.

And on Halloween they pretend they look scary on purpose.

On normal days they use similar makeup and some also look scary - not so much on purpose.

You have disappointed me Malcolm, I never thought you would get carried away by the hype   No need to wait until 31st of October to enjoy a black lipsticked <deleted>, I generally carry a black lipstick whilst mongering, meaning I can enjoy such activities at any time.

Do you carry a mirror so that you do not smudge it when you apply it?   555

It is purely due to the role of businesses, there is simply no other reason for it to exist.    "a major event in Thailand's commercial scene"   that statement would be laughable if it wasn't true ,  A sad reflection of society in my opinion which also reinforces my theory that "economies"  these days seem to be founded on the principal of people spending money they

don't have on things they don't need and  can't afford.   All very sustainable

Does this apply to the billions spent on sporting events and concerts? It's all entertainment, and businesses make billions on entertainment. Without this entertainment, society would crumble and depression would be even more widespread, at least the environmental type. Of course many shops make a lot of money on holidays. Holidays people have always enjoyed. Commercialism of Christmas isn't great, but it still reminds people what Christmas is about, or at least many of them.

People love to act out, like they do in karaoke, because it's fun. People might make their own costumes, at least some of the more talented, but that's what businesses are for, so the rest don't have to. I actually wish I could be back in the US for Halloween, taking my kids trick or treating has always been fun for all of us, and I wish my 7 year old could enjoy what my grandchildren do now. The real problem with a lot of this is the exorbitant prices concert tickets and sporting events charge, mainly to pay people to just sing or play a game. They don't deserve the millions they make, but people will never stop paying because again, people need entertainment.

Thailand is like many other developing countries. They adopt things from other cultures, both as entertainment and in everyday life, as most of the things people use here daily come from other countries. This will continue to happen, as a blending of cultures is always a good thing, as it brings people together.

The question should rather be why is Halloween celebrated in Thailand?

Thailand adopts things from all other cultures, seeing they are things they find interesting. Our music is one example, along with western food. They would do much better if they also adopted enforcement of laws in traffic and building and repair of roads. Also enforcement of child support would make thousands of "fathers" act responsibly for the children they create, then leave.

ISIS isn't a culture but an abomination of one. There is only one way to deal with terrorists of any kind. Extermination without media coverage. Muslims aren't the problem. Just some people are.

Well its a long time since I went to pattaya, sorry to hear Angel witch closed down. I used to like it there.

I am indeed the scrooge of halloween and every other event like it ,   I don't really spend any money these days, as such I don't know what to do with it all.  I am thinking of making a donation to help Donald Trump assume his rightful place as President. Now that would be money well spent

Perhaps ISIS was not the best example I could have used.  But bringing certain "communities" together is not always good.  What about those transvestites etc  reading stories to kids ? hardly Ideal in my opinion

I'm referring to cultures, and not weirdness in society. Most anything is accepted in today's society and that's hardly a good thing. Many people thought Hitler was an okay person, because he had some good ideas, but the real person eventually came out. The same with Pol Pot, Putin, Stalin, Trump, Kim and others.

If you stopped assuming you know what others do, you would be taken more seriously. I'm not a bar person, as I'd rather drink socially with my girlfriend and some of her friends. This is Thailand, and of course you're going to hear more Thai music than western, but much of Thai music is stolen from western styles. Much of Thai music doesn't flow smoothly with the lyrics like western music does. You'd have to really understand music and know what talent is to get this. Thais love western pop and rock music, and this is where a majority of their style comes from, although it doesn't sound anywhere as good as the western variety. Thai music, meaning traditional, sounds good, as the lyrics match the music and playing style. You may or may not understand this, as I don't know how much you know about music and what's good or not.

Why the 4..k do Americans, and now Worldwide celebrate such a silly day.

It was originally a Celtic holiday that was Christianized and almost disappeared, but bits and pieces of it survived in towns and villages in England, Scotland and Ireland. Immigrants brought their local traditions  to North America and Halloween eventually took the modern commercialized form we see today.

Most of the "icons" we associate with Halloween, such jack-o'-lanterns, witches, black cats, scary masks and even trick-or-treating have their origins in Irish or Scottish traditions.  Jack-o'-lanterns were originally carved from turnips or beets.  The pumpkin was a North American vegetable and immigrants discovered it was far better suited for carving than turnips.

Halloween is an excuse to have a party and that's a valid reason anywhere in the world.   A lot of people enjoy drssing up and partying, that's why Halloween has spead to so many countries.

I didn't assume anything . I didn't say what was most popular here. I see it daily on the TV at my girlfriends house. Much of what Thais listen to is western pop style. If it weren't, all they would have is traditional Thai music. Where do you think most of the dance music they like comes from? Adopted from western style. Look also at the rock concerts. The guitar players have practiced using western tabs.

Halloween is a fun opportunity for people to gather around and do things other than going to bars. Watch horror movies, for example, something Thais are good at producing. Back before covid, when I was still teaching some university classes part-time, you could see students walking around campus in costumes. And if Lotus and others use it for commercial advantage? Okay, they make the stores colorful for a few days, as they do at Christmas and Chinese New Year. I always enjoy that. They may even put a few holiday related foods on sale. Even in Thailand, Halloween can be a seasonal gateway to cooler days, crisper mornings, and clear skies. I'm happy to see Thailand celebrate it.

I went out in drag almost every Halloween from my 20's to my early 40's. Great fun once a year. Women loved it, I always ended up in bed with someone new.
