Look at the capital, much of which now resembles a third world hellhole. That's what my English friend often says now days. Even in a small town, pretty unsafe to walk outside home at night, according to him. As thugs often hang around for the search of prey. So he also stresses that he is better off here than back home. Even though I have heard quite a different stories in old time(1970s). English people were generally known for their commonsense orientation. 1 1 1

I've seen crass behaviour from all sorts of people in this country, including Brits. However, we do appear to be everyone's whipping boy. The report also says the vendor's sister stepped in to ask what was going on. Is there also proof of this? Having lived here for over two decades I think its a fairly 'safe assumption' to suggest that the language and tone used when 'Politely asking the Brit to stop smoking' was far from pleasant and far from polite.... In fact, I would go as far and suggest that the stall owner was rather impolite, loud and rude with her request (as we sometimes see in these confrontations). I would also make the assumption that the 'sister followed suit' with said 'loud and rude behavior' which inflamed the situation more. Perhaps due to a language barrier, but I very much doubt the request was "please Sir, would you mind moving away from the stall while smoking, we have food here for customers"... ... and I 'imagine' it was more like... "YOU, YOU, Go away, move, no sa-moke, no sa-moke ... go away"... And the situation went from zero to incendiary in an instant. And of course the article polishes this to make the Thai's look extremely soft and gentle... BUT - with all of that said, the British Guy is an absolute inconsiderate, self-centred ayhole, and no one wants this behavior near them or in their country... such characters are vermin.... BUT... in the 'anatomy of this inflamed interaction' I would guess that smoking triggered the upset of the Thai stall workers who's response escalated the interaction into the ensuing row. 56 minutes ago, 2long said: I'm far from on the side of the smoking farang, but anyone who's been here long enough knows (in addition to how bad farang can be) that sometimes the locals don't ask politely and their 'siblings' happily and quickly join in a confrontation without 'asking who's right or wrong' Just saying! Completely agree - though we may be accused of 'victim blaming' here - I doubt the two ladies in question were shrinking violets... and the Brit was clearly a grade A1 ayhole. 4 1

Should cut all the talk out and just throw a bucket of water over them Not a wholly disagreeable point !!.... I do agree, anyone smoking in the vicinity of non-smokers and in a non-designated smoking area are hardly of commendable character.... But... escalation and inflaming a situation is not a solution....

Accidents, bad behavior, drunk etc. Acting like kids and short tempered. A disgrace for their homeland We are a disgrace. I think I will start telling people I am Canadian, they seem to cause about a one hundredth of the incidents that we do. Nice people, very polite, good manners and know how to behave. They are trying to ban us from parts of Spain at the moment, and I feel it in Phuket also. I think denial is part of the problem as we see on this forum, it isn’t just the Russians we complain about, it is the Thais also. Makes me cringe to be honest. 1 1

JoergADA Posted October 24 Posted October 24 Just last week, a guy on a motorcycle in front of me smoked so I stopped in front of a school to clean my nose. As the school was closed the guard was smoking there next to the water sinks. As I did not expect that it meant more second hand smoke for me. Conclusion, there is no escaping it.

Sure, some Brits are an absolute embarrassment, and when you say "we," you’re clearly lumping yourself in with the worst of the lot. But every Brit I know, almost without exception, has basic decency, manners, and respect for others - qualities you lack. If you roll around with dogs, don’t be surprised when you wake up covered in fleas, MalcomB. Maybe if you stop surrounding yourself with lowlifes and drunk-driving mongers you'd meet some people who aren’t complete degenerates and recognise that not all British folk are the despicable characters you generalise us for. 1 1 1 1 2 1
