Now 4 years in, glad I followed my heart to migrate. Family and longtime friends know wherever I hang my hat, is home. I appreciate the shared information and laughs had in this medium… at the same time, I spend too much time bypassing posts or comments of debbie-downers, racists and finger pointers… and yet I have not met an expert who is here by force. The perks far outweigh the problems… That’s my opinion and, for better or worse, I’m curious to know why other folks have become expats in Thailand. I was assigned here in the early 70's with US military fighting in the VN conflict. After that, once that conflict was over, I convinced my family to come here - my office agreed and we were assigned to Bangkok. My family loved the touring and great things about Thailand in the days of the late '70 era, I came back in the '90 era with just my wife, we both continued to enjoy Bangkok even with some of the negative "progress". So, after my wife passed away, I retired here in Bangkok. Did plan on marriage but guess it was in my blood by then so did get married. Now we have a 21-year old young college girl of whom we are very proud. I still love Thailand, realizing after living in many different countries, some with different cultures entirely, that nowhere is perfect, no even where I grew up in the US but Thailand certainly checks most of the areas of which I am primarily concerned. Will it remain even for the short period remaining of my life as I am 78 this month so sure hope it remains such a pleasure to face each day. I could easily live in the US but I have an older daughter there plus friends with whom I chat regularly and see that a lot more of negative changes there too so will hope any change is slower to occur here. Thailand is still that "paradise" to me. 2 1

When I was back in the UK 2009, working 'supply', I was paid 130GBP (+NI) for every day I worked in high school. And I could have worked every weekday if I had wanted. It's not just qualifications that you need in the UK - you have to be young! They simply won't consider oldies. Well, actually it's the same in Thailand.... As for me, a few months till I hit 66 years old and my UK state pension. Next week, I start a new teaching job back in Myanmar again (a country I both love and am drawn to time and time again). 1
Popular Post AndreasHG Posted November 2 Popular Post Posted November 2 I worked here for an American Fortune 500 company twenty years ago. My job brought me elsewhere again and again, but I knew a time would come for me to come back here and settle down. It's far from perfect but there are too many things to love about Thailand, starting from the food and its people. 1 2

Popular Post soalbundy Posted November 2 Popular Post Posted November 2 Life is easier here and nobody bothers you, it's live and let live. In the West they must have a rules and regulations machine that is running 24/7. Yes we have the yearly visa and the 90 day rule but that is nothing compared to the finger wagging West, comply and fit in. Here they have rules but mostly people don't bother with them, as one Thai civil servant said to me, tongue in cheek, "We have our regulations but they are like a flowing river, if you don't want to get wet stay away from them". 3

Couldn't get the same level of remuneration back home (UK), so here for good now. Plus I now have a family here (although not Thai). You must be a real teacher. Are your kids being robbed of opportunities in life due to the Thai education system? It's like overcoming a learning disorder or speech impediment. I came to Pattaya to take the waters. Maybe one day I'll find them.

All-year-summer and barefoot-Xmas was first priority for me about 20 years ago. I haven't regret it for a moment... Secondarily was a young enough partner to give me an heir, which also happened, now I was here; havn't regret that either...😉 1

Sigmund Posted November 2 Posted November 2 Most are here for the pussy boumboum and the booze that is cheaper then back home. Until when they catch some awful STD and then it's another story. But also many decent one's who are happily married and are happily funding, sponsoring the entire lady's thai family. Others with a girl friend, who they are paying monthly rent and thinking that he is the only one ? Then comes the worst, those expat types, rude, arrogant foreigners thinking that they own Thailand and that their western dynamics would work here,. They are the worst, the biggest show offs, loud, mouthy and they look down on other foreigners living here. Of course no generalization as you have good decent people everywhere and from anywhere, Except it's hard to bump into them in the heart of Nana Plaza or a seedy bar in Jomtien or in a brothel of Patpong. 1

Nothing - we worked in a business together for 20 years. We bought real estate and made money. How about you? Are you paying your old lady to stay with you? 1 1

I've only had one STD check in Thailand, in 20 years... recently my new girlfriend insisted on it. There's no need to see a doctor. Clinics have an assortment of packages if you feel you're at risk. Mine cost 700 baht, so no one became rich from it.

RSD1 Posted November 3 Posted November 3 I came for a vasectomy in 1972, but after the procedure, I wanted to be absolutely sure they snipped the right wire before heading back. Ever since, I’ve been roaming the Land of Smiles, laying down pecker tracks to reconfirm the operation was a success. So far, so good… but time flies when you’re dedicated to testing all your ammo!
