Subway uses the master franchise system in Thailand, which means U.S. management is not directly involved in daily operations.  In describing its plans for international expansion, Subway stated:  "The master franchisees will have exclusive rights to manage and develop Subway locations in their respective countries and have committed to remodeling existing locations as well as opening new restaurants in the brand's current, contemporary image." https://newsroom.subway.com/2023-06-29-Subway-R-Celebrates-15-New-Master-Franchise-Agreements-Since-2021

It seems like Subway have turned round from that.  Have you seen how many they have just shut down for not "behaving"?  Orders came from the USA after Thai franchises tried to take advantage and do it "their way" and many have been shut down now.  No loss IMO but some may have liked them.

Thanks for the information. But I have to ask: Are you sure? I just checked his Wikipedia page and googled obituary Eric Schlosser and I didn't find any confirmation.

I read a couple of his books, all very interesting.

You are absolutely right!  I got confused with the guy who did the film “Super Size Me”. Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, an Oscar nominee whose most famous works skewered America’s food industry and who notably ate only at McDonald’s for a month to illustrate the dangers of a fast-food diet. He was 53. Apologies for the confusion.

Good article on Bill Heinecke from 1990:

There was some disagreement with Pizza Hut, I remember reading about it at the time. Then he founded Pizza Company which in effect was a similar business but just their own brand.

Don't be surprised if something similar happens here with the Subway franchises.

the new subway master franchise has connections with PT petrol station, the existing franchise that was closed first were the one in PTT petrol stations, so looks like the new owners wants exclusivity for petrol stations

from the existing franchise's point of view, their previous contracts remain valid so they stay open - maybe they got cut off from certain ingredients it's gonna be a big mess to sort out legally for sure

the existing locations that are now considered-fakes did nothing wrong - they have lease to go and employee they can't suddenly afford to pay severance, the previous master franchiser has breached their contract in being unable to supply ingredients or secure exclusive rights to the brand
