Israeli Man Fined for Riding Motorcycle on Phuket Beach, Cites Lack of Signage

In an incident that has raised eyebrows, an Israeli tourist was fined for riding a motorcycle on Kamala Beach in Phuket and expressed confusion over the law, noting that such practices are allowed in Israel.

 

At around 16:30 on November 5, Police Lieutenant Colonel Nakorn Chatphai, Deputy Investigator at Kamala Police Station, received reports of a foreign tourist riding a motorcycle along Kamala Beach, Kamala Subdistrict, Kathu District. The motorcycle reportedly became stuck in the sand, and the incident was captured on video and circulated widely online.

 

Following the report, Police Colonel Somsak Thongkliang, Chief of Kamala Police Station, instructed a task force and patrol team to locate the tourist. They soon found Mr. Amir Midhat, a 30 year old Israeli national, who was brought to Kamala Police Station for questioning.

 

The officers informed Mr. Midhat about the offense, explaining that it is against Thai law to ride motorcycles on public beaches. Mr. Midhat admitted to the act, stating that he was unaware of such restrictions, as there are no similar prohibitions in Israel. He also mentioned the absence of warning signs indicating the rule on the beach.

 

Mr. Midhat accepted responsibility for the misunderstanding and agreed to pay a 5,000 baht fine to settle the matter.

It may have escaped his attention, but he is in Thailand and NOT Israel. Most people would have enough common sense to ask if such was allowed, before attempting to ride a motorbike on the beach.

   This is a Thai law, its NOT and International law .

Riding motorbikes on a beach is a national law, rather than an international law

In the Arabic language, Amir means Prince, Rich, or Cultivated and Midhat (the english form of  مدحت) means "praise" or "eulogy"

I would never have known that.

 

My Thai wife and my Thai son have never pointed that out to me. Nor have they pointed out that we live in a Thai village in rural Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand and have done for over 20 years. Nor did my wife point out that I/we lived in Bangkok, Thailand where I was working during 1993, 1994 to 1997, 2001 to 2004 when we moved here after the house was built and our son (now at Chiang Rai Rajabhat University) Thailand was born.

 

I must have gone partially blind for the last 31 years.

Motor vehicles are prohibited on Israeli beaches.   Aside from minimizing injuries on popular beaches,  there are security concerns. Someone driving a vehicle on a beach could easily be mistaken as a terrorist and be dealt with accordingly.

 

A simple visit with Google shows beaches rules such as;

- Glass bottles are prohibited on the beach
- NO motor sports (jet skis, boats) are allowed on the beach.
- Motorized vehicles are forbidden on beaches and the boardwalk.
- Bonfires are prohibited on operating beaches.

  I do think that a 5000 Baht fine is rather excessive , a 500 Baht fine and a Wai would have been adequate .

He wasn’t thinking as most tourists. Seen a tourist couple drowning a rented motorcycle in flood water taking pictures a couple of weeks ago in cm and subsequently ended up having to push the dead bike other 100+ meters

To post on the beach all the rules, it would take a billboard to cite everything. But maybe post some police on the beach who can and must directly warn beach violators.
