Running Out Of Money. Need Advice.

That's a tough position to be in, my heart certainly goes out to him, being broke is no fun. I had a friend who was in a similar position and fortunately he was a skilled tradesman, and he was able to go back to the US and start working for the union again building skyscrapers in San Francisco. Without a skill he's in a tough spot, my guess is he's going to have to go back to his native country and live on the graces of his family for a while.

I had another friend who this happened to it, he was a very clever and charming guy, very industrious, a hard worker, and quite skilled as an English teacher, but he just couldn't get a good solid, steady job that paid enough money. He took a contract in Vietnam, it didn't work out and he ended up completely broke. He accepted help from his brother moved back to the States and in his 50s, he got a job working in Kmart, which is all he would qualify for. He put up with that for about 2 years and then took his own life. I spoke to him 6 months before he killed himself and he said if he can't get back to Thailand, if he has to live like this it's just not worth it. He sounded really desperate.

If he has little money left in his pocket/bank account, he had better ask US embassy for help.

They have emergency loan scheme to their citizens while overseas in some cases.

Or simply request his repatriation home.

One American man I knew(in his 70s) went home this way.

In his case, the cause was his dementia though.

Because of his inability to look after himself, the hospital staff he was admitted in, contacted their State Department.

does us embassy have any emergency loan scheme to their citizens while overseas? - Google Search

Homeless, penniless, jobless and generally useless. If I was in his condition I would not want to be wandering around Asia. In spite of what you say I think this guy should be back in the USA. Failing that, try the UK. We give potential terrorists and layabouts from overseas free board, food, medical attention and pocket money, with no time limit on their length of stay.

I dunno I think he deserves some advice from other expats with experience rather then a Freudian analysis. Unfortunately, I can't think of much advice to give him.

One angle could be getting to know other expats and moving in together with other expats having financial problems. Splitting rent and food 4 ways is cheaper then going solo.

Returning to the USA is probably a death sentence if he is on the street. Not just from the weather, it's outright dangerous.

Despite what the video portrays, he's probably doing ok.  I think it's all an act.

His YouTube channel should be monetized given he has more than the required number of subscribers and is most likely getting enough watch hours to qualify.

I doubt you or anyone else bothered to do any digging.  Check out his website - https://scottrasher.com/

He could find a bs job online.

Like freelancer or something.

He could also become a scientologist.

My understand is that the church pays around 49$ a week.

That's a start.

Wouldn't it be the other way around with the Scientology, you pay them ?

Can't see them paying you unless your a movie star ?

Scientology don't like the down & out. Probably means the Moonies for free room & board. I think these days they screen people though. They can tell if you're really into it or not.

Unfortunately, all I can suggest is that he returns to his country and tries to get a job in a fast-food outlet or does a voluntary job that comes with food and accommodation for a while. That's if he can fly back. I can't see him finding a solution in Thailand or Cambodia unless he gets involved in illegal activities and succeeds, which is unlikely.

As for those who think that this couldn't possibly happen to them, you're wrong. WW3 is a real possibility and then your pension would be ravaged by hyperinflation and won't be enough for you to stay in Thailand. Then you'll have to return to your country, which might be at war. Good luck then!

Jim Tripper - Not sure how much is left but with all that travel and doing this and that - it doesn't sound like the road to financial independence... How much are all those lattes? Worked in a casino and cannot know that it is a 100% road to losses? How can it end for such an unaware person?

And why does he think he is still young?

Is it the same guy in the other YouTube videos?

I feel sorry for him but it seems between construction and casino work, he had plenty of opportunities. What words could help him?

4, let's say unsuccessful, males forced into a scavenger community to survive. Sharing a pressure cooker cauldron of a slum apartment in a tropical hot foreign country with no access to social safety nets. Where the only thing they have in common is a desire to drink and smoke weed day in day out.

What could possibly go wrong?

They have to for legal reasons if you work for them full time.

Full time being 70 hours a week, no day off, etc...

Essentially slavery with a 49$ perk per week :partytime2:

Anyways. Garbage.

Only a matter of time till a drunken dispute over 50 baht results in a corpse or two. Just like the poorest Thais we read about here. Happens all over the world.

If this is all true the guy needs to get home and get a job and stop stretching things out like chewing gum until tragedy strikes. If he's not even capable of getting a foothold to start out from back home, then he certainly won't survive in SEA. A sea of tears is all that awaits him here.

If the guy does find a solution, please have him post back for the benefit of others in a similar situation.

Many of us are 1 bad bank hack, one bad health issue, or some other factor outside of our control from being skint.

For some, I fear it's going to be a change in tax laws...  Maybe not even paying the taxes, but getting caught out for not filling in the right paperwork to get next year's extension.

I did that in college and grad school when finances were tight, but things are different when you're younger and the future looks bright...

Not actually 😅. I'm just worried about the guy. Could be any of us with some bad luck.

I don't believe in bad luck. I do believe in bad choices.

I have certainly made enough in my own life to know. I learned from them.

Just become a teacher.  They literally accept anyone these days.  The druggies, the alcoholics, the pedos.  CRB checks only do Thailand not the country of origin.  Most teachers I know don't have a degree.  They want clowns not educated people.

Get a job you lazy bum.

Nice one. They usually handle the visa as well don't they?

I love the "Trasher" part of his website URL. That says it all and describes him perfectly.

The irony about all the overpriced services that he's trying to sell on his website is that he isn't capable of providing any of them.

He's too busy hiding under a rock in PP, making garbage begpacker videos, while worrying about where his next free bag of weed or $2 fried rice meal is going to come from.

Agreed. There is a certain degree in life of misfortune, wrong place, wrong time. But generally, the understanding is that you make your own luck, good or bad. And this geezer certainly has made his own. Nobody has mistreated him, abused him, nor is he a victim of anything other than his own laziness and grifter mentality. If anything, he has possibly harmed others by taking from them when he shouldn't have.

Definitely fewer help wanted signs when I visited was back last September, than 21 or 22, but still there. Millennials seem to be lazy effers. Given his skill set, or lack of one, basic service industry or Walmart, but geeez, a lot better life than being down & out in Thailand. OTOH Video Vlogger screams feckless too, so.

Thailand is a country I would not want to be penniless farang in.
