Historic Phuket Old Town has become the epicentre of a ground-breaking campaign championing low-carbon tourism, announced by the Department of Tourism on Monday, November 18. The initiative was launched with an event showcasing the best of sustainable travel practices and the island's cultural charm.

In the very heart of Phuket, local leaders and media representatives gathered to experience the innovative project first-hand. The President of the Old Town Community Enterprise, Samyot Pathan, praised the model town's role in sustainable tourism, stating "We are proud to set an example for environmentally conscious travel.”

Exploring the Old Town on foot, attendees visited notable landmarks such as Bann 92, Woo Café and the historic China Inn. Further highlights included an exciting ride on the green 'Dragon Line' electric bus and a city tour on electric bicycles.

This new emission-cutting scheme, which aims to foster both an appreciation of local culture and sustainable travel habits, is part of a wider, national strategy enacted by the Department of Tourism. The aim is to curb pollution and advocate for responsible tourism across Thailand.

Introduced by Bhummikitti Ruktaengam, the Chairperson of the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation, at September's 25th International Island Tourism Forum, the Phuket Old Town Carbon Neutrality Project is ambitious, targeting a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and aiming for net-zero emissions by 2065.

Reports regarding the first half of this year show the Old Town recorded an output of 525,832 KgCO2e, with electricity usage responsible for the majority at 442,259 KgCO2e. Project Coordinator Kanruthay confirmed the invaluable work with universities and government bodies to assist in measuring and controlling emissions, stating, "This is our starting point for change.”

Through these innovative approaches to championing sustainable travel, Phuket Old Town is setting a worldwide example, and the island as a whole is rapidly earning recognition as a global beacon of sustainable tourism.
