Myanmar Navy Fires on Thai Fishing Boats in Thai Waters, Seizing Two Vessels

Featured Replies

Other (Thai) news channels report that they were in Burmese waters due to fish plentiful there and depleted on thai side. Presumably common practice.

And Thailand is supporting this illegal military regime that has invaded it's waters, stolen boats and kidnapped its own people. Shame on you Thailand.

In any normal country. I wold think This would be considered an act of war. But Thailand can not support any military actions except rescue and attacking its own people for political purposes.

I consider Thailand as cowards if they do not respond with real force and show these bastards who is the boss in Thai territories!

This is why I tell anyone who will listen that the Royal Thai Navy needs to upgrade its fleet of submarines! I have sketched out some concept art that looks great and will project power. Whom do I contact? I don't require recompense, but if one or more of the fleet could be named after me, I would consider it a great honor. Thank you in advance.

A major lack of balls😃

of course Thais will say the boats were in Thai waters…now that will need to be verified or proven wrong by Burma as well as what is the appropriate action to take if they were given civilians were involved

Seems pretty clear that the fishing boats were in Thai waters, as per the headline:-

Winner!

If Thailand does nothing but file a protest, this will happen again and possibly the price will be more than one death and two fishing boats.

I am not an advocate of conflict, but history has shown, that doing nothing and remaining passive, will only embolden the opposition.

A dramatic confrontation unfolded in the Andaman Sea as three Myanmar navy vessels opened fire on a group of Thai fishing boats operating within Thai territorial waters,

Finaly a war near Thailand      But you still have your jet fighters, bomb the <deleted> out  of (the leader)

Not surprisingly the article does double speak.  At first it clearly stated the fishing boats were operating in Thai waters.  Then towards the end it mentions risks of disputed waters.

Very sadly for that fisherman who lost his life and those injured in the encounter, whether they were in Thai or Burmese waters is to be established but no need to open fire on fishing boats like they did. Thailand shamefully supports the Burmese Junta who are murdering their own people which the Thai authorities are very aware of so this type of behaviour is both very foolish and unnecessary by the Burmese Navy, an indication of their aggressiveness. When will Thailand gets some morals and ethics and condemn  these murdering scumbags,  I guess there are some financial benefits for the Thai's so that means morals & ethics get shelved!

Well that escalated quickly. Myanmar taking a page out of China's playbook (patrols and force). Of course if the Thai boats where poaching (which would not be a surprise) than Myanmar is within their rights. But it's still a big FU to Thailand. Luckily for Myanmar, Thailand is weak has week leaders and is easily pushed around.

I'm sure there was plenty wrong on both sides that is not written and shared.

Still disgusting to see military weapons being put into use though.

Shame on you Thailand.

I never heard that they are supporting this regime.  It's much more complicated than appears on the surface. My research shows that the regimes are intertwined, that each depends on the other for necessary imports/exports. Thailand is extremely dependent on Myanmar for a wide range of needs. That's certainly not the same as propping up a regime for political reasons. This reminds me of how the Chinese are harassing the Filipinos, except the Chines never fired on anyone, to their credit. https://fulcrum.sg/neighbour-to-civil-war-thailands-relations-with-myanmar-in-2024/

Thailand's muted response to this incident is strange to me. If a Mexican gunboat fired on an American fishing vessel, or an Indonesian gunboat on an Australian vessel, those western countries would react aggressively and there would be a diplomatic stand-off at the very least.

However, the Thai/Myanmar incident has attracted little dometic media and doesn't seem to be a big deal to the Thai government.

Maybe human rights really are less valued in Asian diplomacy with any tough talking done behind the scenes. Or maybe western powers over-react when similar incidents occur?

In another article they stated Thai boats routinely enter Myanmar waters to fish, defying warnings.

Quote

Thai fishing boats have often defied warnings from Myanmar and continued to operate in Myanmar waters, which have more fish stocks than Thai waters, said Vice Adm Suwat.

It seems that all those defensive weapons acquired by Thailand are not helpful. The Thai military's abject fear of provoking Burma overcomes its duty to defend the nation.

By the actions that have been taken my the Myanmar I would say that the Thai boats were NOT in Thai waters and probably not for the first time... therefore they only have themselves to blame, which is why we'll never here of this again - move on, nothing to see here!

Time to send the Aircraft Carrier “HTMS Chakri Naruebet”! The aircrafts can be ordered later

There are, as expected, contradictions to this news report. 15 or 50 Thai fishing boats for starters and even an admission by the Thai Defense Ministry.

For reference:

The Thai defense ministry earlier said two of 15 Thai fishing vessels were fired on when they were 4-5.7 nautical miles (7.4-10.6 km) inside Myanmar's territorial waters

https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2024-12-01/thailand-protests-myanmars-navy-firing-at-thai-fishing-boats

IMO, the Burmese Navy, despite Junta operated, has every right to protect its fishing grounds within its territorial waters from illegal Thai fishing boats.  I wonder what the Thai Navy would do to stop illegal fishing by Burmese boats within Thai territorial waters. Send a submarine armed with torpedoes?

I would send in a company of Pattaya ladyboys with swinging handbags.

This is a blatant Act of War. I would like to see them get their arses kicked for what they did to their last prime minister

A ruthless and unreliable military government in Burma can only spell long-term trouble for Thailand.
(If some short-term gains for a few well-placed wealthy people)

History tells a tale.

Until things started to come apart with increasingly effective armed resistance to the coup, the motto of the top brass was "We are building the Fourth Burmese Empire."

Thais should be thanking the now widespread resistance to military dictatorship.
And supporting the goal of a federal, civilian-dominated union.

It is in Thailand's interest.

One of the ladies of a certain age in my Samui yoga class said she owned a boat.

What she means is a Thai man owns her boat, which she rents.

And then she overcharges for excursions.

Owning a boat makes about as much sense as owning an airplane.

There's plenty of airplanes going everywhere.  Same with boats.

Boats = Sunburn.

"Your A Idiot." 😁

How embarrassing. Myanmar invaded Thai waters, destroyed Thia citizen's property, kidnapped and murdered them. So what does Thailand do?  Send a strongly worded letter! Way to bend over and take it without lube.

Among others who think that Burma is within their rights to defend their territorial waters.... Yeah, sure they are, of course, but I think you'd be very hard pressed to find that they were within their rights here! Unless, of course, a major part of the story is missing - that the Thai fishermen responded to the Burmese legal (assuming they were in Burmese waters) boarding and inspections of their vessels, with violence. If that were the case, then it could warrant shots fired. International law doesn't call for poachers to be killed on sight! That is insane to give even an ounce of defense to such an action. "Nothing to see here"?  Murder is no big deal in some people's book, apparently. Just wait until it hits your family....

Thailand need to avoid being dragged into an armed conflict with Myanmar .

Cut all diplomatic relations to the murderous Myanmar junta would be better .

Gem Min Aung Hlung , the butcher of his own people , will soon have an ICC arrest warrant against him issued .

He is a war criminal just as the other " Leaders " who are facing arrest when traveling to a country that recognizes the ICC as the superior instance to judge international crimes .

You didn't get the memo?

The ICC has suddenly and conveniently been cancelled, war crimes indictments are to be ignored.
