Even that 470 gr for 279 baht is a good deal imo, here in Ayutthaya Makro don’t stock the Mainland brand and seem to change brands all the time, Aro ( Makro own ) is okay, Anchor is good but then sometimes have only Horeca ( the Lipton’s equivalent in cheese making ! ) which is p1ss poor.

Any other locations have this 470 gr Mainland ( and hopefully buy 1 free 1 also ) as I only see Chiang Mai ??

The Aro cheese is about 80 baht cheaper than Mainland.

The deal maybe is related to having too much stock, too close to the best before or use-by date.

It's cheaper, but the taste is not the best imho.

Apparently store wide, and just picked up a couple 'Tasty' myself

@trevoromgh THANKS

Check your BB date, and if planning of freezing and shedding later, then shred before you freeze, as cheddar tends to crumble apart afterwards, when trying to shred.

Makro Cheddar blocks are 360/kg locally / PKK, so a nice buy.

Here it's discounted for some time already, but not  buy 1 get 1 free. I think it's 189 for one.

You are right 189 for all the range . So a bit of a con from the store but still a saving of about 100baht.?

It's not as good as the Mainland, but adequate.

Unfortunately just got mine on Thursday in Petchabun so missed the offer.

Real Mainland cheese originates in NZ.

The offer may only be at a limited number of stores where it was over ordered and not at all Makro's.

Yea, and I just did a 'side by side' test, and whoa, what a difference.   I had the ARO on hand to make Velveeta, which was probably a mistake, as turned out just OK.

Tasty is nice, and Vintage is too sharp & crumbly for me.

Keep Aro on hand for my 3 cheese & Peperoni or Chorizo pizza (Parmesan, Mozzarella & Cheddar), and works fine, as a sharp Cheddar is too dominate a flavor.

You buy cheese to make another cheese?

IIRC Velveeta was a cheese which resembled Kraft Singles, in being more flexible plastic than cheese.

Love Vintage myself, each to his own.

Yes, turned out good, texture wise, and melting factor, like  Kraft singles, but I wouldn't call 'single' cheese, and they technically don't.  Not a fan of the extra crap in 'singles', a 'cheese product' :cheesy:

Velveeta turned out pretty good, but could have used a sharper cheese for flavor.  It was quite simple, Cheese, milk powder, gelatin & water (boiling).

If you like a tasty mature cheddar cheese then Makro are doing a great value offer right now on the Mainland brand cheese from Australia which is the closest thing I've found to the English cheddar I usually buy in UK.   Bought this today at Makro on the superhighway near Bangkok Hospital but I presume it is running in all their branches.   Get it while you can as stock going down fast. Keeps well in the freezer too.

That's cool.

tomorrow is monthly shop in Nongkhai Makro.

Why would you want to freeze cheese? Leave it in the pack unopened in the fridge and it's good for months. Freeze it and you ruin a perfectly good cheese.

They are vacuum packed, I think, so not a problem.   Lots of time, I can't use it up by BBD, so freezing works, though portioned out smaller & will vacuum seal it.

Local vendors don't have a good variety, so if stocking up at Hua Hin (100 kms away) then yea, need to freeze, and never an issue.

Some, hard cheeses, Cheddar especially, doesn't freeze well, and depending on my use, may not freeze it.  Of late, it's been my got to snack, so not much cheddar or others, but gets frozen, if not used by BBD.  Also cheaper by bulk, usually.

I stay in Thailand less than 180 days each year so it is useful to be able to freeze if necessary.  Just came back recently and the stock in the freezer tastes great though I haven't tried to grate it which KhunLA mentioned can be problematic after freezing, sliced & diced it's fine.   As mentioned you can also take advantage of offers when they occur.

Bought two lots of Mainland Vintage & Tasty this morning which is a good deal

ARO and Mainland are both made in NZ.  2 different companies, and the latter is tastier.

We always freeze self-proportioned cheddar as even vacuum packed blocks can deteriorate, usually evidenced by white mold spores on outside.

At our Makro since years after they had the smaller size before.

But for us too big. Takes long to use up.

There have been some discounts at other shops for the smaller size.

Hope it's not a clearance sale.

Makro offers 500gr of Kellogs Corn Flakes for 76 Baht! Price skyrocketed to 145 at other shops.

Nice but suspicious.

Bet it will be gone.
