A loud crashing sound startled Betong Municipality workers on the morning of December 1, as a massive landslide occurred behind the municipal office in Betong, Yala province. The incident caused the parking lot to collapse, severely damaging several vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, as it was at the weekend.

 

At approximately 07:45, municipal staff working over the weekend reported hearing a loud noise. Upon investigating, they discovered that a landslide had struck the rear of the Betong municipal office building. The landslide displaced soil, causing parked government vehicles to tilt and lift. A total of seven vehicles were damaged in the incident.

 

Mr. Sakul Lenglakun, the Mayor of Betong, arrived at the scene shortly after and conducted an initial assessment of the damage. He explained that the landslide had caused extensive damage to the parking area and raised concerns about potential structural impacts on the municipal building. Officials have been relocated to the old municipal office building as a precaution.

 

The mayor stated that the Yala Provincial Public Works and Town Planning Office, along with other relevant agencies, have been notified to inspect the building and surrounding area to ensure safety and plan preventive measures.

 

While the landslide itself caused no injuries, its aftermath has heightened concerns among local residents regarding shortages of essential goods. Landslides have disrupted portions of the Yala–Betong highway, a key supply route. However, local authorities have assured the public that deliveries of fresh produce and essential goods, including cooking gas, have resumed. Trucks from Hat Yai, Songkhla province, were able to deliver supplies earlier this morning, alleviating concerns about food shortages.

 

Additionally, public transportation services between Yala and Betong have resumed despite the damaged highway. Although traffic is limited to a single lane in some areas, operators have continued services to meet the urgent needs of the community.

 

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has reported a decrease in rain activity in southern Thailand. However, isolated showers are still expected in areas including Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat, urging residents to remain cautious as the region recovers from the landslide.
