The Philippines

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

I just returned from a 10 day stay in the Philippines. I spent my arrival and a few days prior to departure in Manila and the bulk of the trip in Baguio.

No Mongering was done as I was with my daughter.

Everywhere you look there was abject poverty and children/seniors begging, Everyone is trying to scam you, The signs everywhere to not leave your items unattended. The constant stream of guys asking to sell 5 Dollar silver coins, or glasses or Viagra or belts or whatever and even after saying not interested they still hound you. The general griminess everywhere.

I can't fathom how anyone finds it agreeable for long trips.

I just passed the age where in the Philippines they consider me a senior citizen. and I was allowed the discount in a few places using my passport and not allowed it in others. I found that the places that didn't give it tended to be higher scale restaurants. I didn't try in hotels as I booked them online. But I couldn't get a straight answer from anyone on why they wouldn't accept it. especially since they didn't take a copy to show to someone to prove why they gave the discount. The bus to bagnio gave it to me no problem.

I had to bring a bottle of Siracha bought at duty free to get it past security. as most of the food is unpalatable without some form of outside help and most if not all of their sauces are 50% sugar and 50% syrup. with .0000000001% flavor from what ever the sauce is supposed to be.

I honestly had the very worst meal in a national chain restaurant there, Both were American chains that have been shut down in the US for years. Breakfast at a national chain from the US where they didn't have bread required to make a sandwich, This has happened to me in the past in the Philippines. The house that chicken built didn't have the chicken my then GF wanted. The breakfast place didn't have the bread for the breakfast sandwich they are known for.   1 coffee chain the coffee was so bad I had to throw it out and I couldn't bring myself to try to ask them to make it right because it was just bad ingredients. . The Malay/Indonesian place that didn't have Sambal, There are other examples but I think you get the drift.  1 coffee chain the coffee was so bad I had to throw it out and I couldn't bring myself to try to get them to make it right.

I will admit if Thailand every tossed me out, And Vietnam or Cambodia were not options I would consider Baguio as it was a polished rock in an otherwise dismal country.

But you get a full UK State pension there.  I am sure there is scope for a local enterprising company to maintain an address there for ex-pats living in Thailand, to provide proof of living in the Philippines.  (I don't know how they would get round the passport thing?)

Sounds awful but you'd go back, go figure

I miss typed, It should say IF Vietnam or Cambodia were not options. I would consider Baguio,

But you do raise a good point, I think I just don't like to say never. It would be a very hard sell for me to go back to live there for any reason.

Phillipines for me

Have no direct flights (my orign country)

Awful local Food

Bad Infrastructure

To much poverty

Bad typhons

Beautiful ladies, but common comes with duties and big family

Beautiful country, nice for motorbike

Very good diving and beautiful Islands

Fresh seafood marked good

Relatively Cheap

Easy visa extension

Beautiful ladies, but common comes with duties and big family, Same in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia.

Beautiful country, nice for motorbike, go back to your comment on Infrastructure, Roads are horrible, and bad internet

Very good diving and beautiful Islands, Vietnam, Indonesia, Limited in Thailand but still not horrible.

Fresh seafood marked good, But only in limited locations. and how does this work with your comment on local food?

Relatively Cheap Same for the other 3.

Easy visa extension

I had chosen Brazil before Phil

So in the end I am not sure I understand you.

You do not know much about statistics, diving, adventure motorcycles, cooking,

When it comes to Phillippine cuisine it doesnt help with high quality fresh food, it is for me tasteless, but I do cook myself, so I know how to make seafood tasty, or make a steak or two.

So marked was supposed to be Market. Got it,  and the only take away from my comment is about food? And for that you decided that I am not knowledgeable about diving, statistics or cooking.

Not sure why you are offended so much, But hey you do you.

At 2.5% pa the state pension goes from £220 to £280 per week. over ten years.....not too sure a move to the Philippines is worth it.

This review is just one place in Philippines, can't all be the same?

I've spent a good amount of time there "looking" upon retirement....

The OP is accurate & correct.....And, in fact, just scratching the surface....

Well as backups to Thailand for retirement, Vietnam is out because no visas.

Between Cambodia and the Philippines I think the latter is better.

It depends on where there.

I reckon places such as BGC, Makati, Dumaguette, lloilo, and as mentioned Baguio would be just fine.

Of course Cambodia wins the prize for visas. but I reckon if it gets much better, they'll then make it harder.

You mean there is more junk fast food places gone down in "quality"?

Actually this was me venting about 20 years of frustration from many trips and even living there for 5 years, I have mostly spent my time in Angeles and Manila but have been as far south as Cebu and there wasn't a difference IMHO. Baguio was the exception and almost made the Philippines palatable, The only place left there that I want to go to is Puerta Princessa but only because I want to dive the wrecks there. And I am getting a little long in the tooth for that so not sure I will get it done.  But overall I stand by my assessment. There are better places to spend time and money.

Not sure if this guy liked it or not, but as for the diving, I have over 500 dives - has to be one of the best dive countries in the world.  One fellow diver, claimed to get paid by Natl Geographic magazine to go take photos of sealife in Red Sea but this photographer pays her own way to come to PI to dive and take photos of the abundance of varied sealife.  Water is crystal clear and warm so no wet suit really needed.   Sunken warships also at many dive locations.  Also, by writing a report on the PI, yet only going to the main island, when there are over 7000 islands doesn't even come close to talking about living conditions.  On the main island, there are more tourists than in most places so that is why the scam artists abound there.  Baguio during the "winter" season though was always nice for golfers!  Just saying about my experiences there.

The Philippines have great diving compared to Thailand, and the best I have experienced in Asia cant brag about to many dive countries, but I have been to most dive sites in Thailand, so at least I know whats here compared to those sites I have been to in Phil.

Also for adventure motorbike touring,  Phil is great as well, and that's where he got confused when I first complained about infrastructure, and then claimed it was good for motorbike touring 😄

When it comes to family growth and population, Philippines have more children, uncles, aunties, and to be fair, philippines do take alot responsibility for the family and share a lot more than Thais do. Not to forget, the Philippines is very poor compared to Thailand.

I get £92 per week so a jump to £280 would be worth it - my idea would be to continue living in Thailand but with a postal address in the Philippines with a company to forward any communications from DWP.

Thanks for reaffirming the reasons why I never stepped foot there. I have a couple friends that live there and they love it. Everyone else that I know who has been there hates it.

yes I lived there 6 years and agree that the local food sucks though if one eats fast food from the west then big cities probably have some.

Phillippines is great if you are mobile and healthy, and cook food yourselves, or your partner/wife, and also do not need to fly back to your homecountry 3 times a year or more. As well can afford a typhon and earthquake safe housing 😄

You fit in well. Begging to get "senior rates" every place you went.

I’m mobile and healthy and I can’t stand that ghetto place having to meander in order to be comfortable. Why be isolated in a posh micro environment in the Philippines when you can live in a country like Thailand and roam around without having to deal with ghetto people and their raunchy food.

I enjoyed staying months in Philippines, and I enjoyed years in Thailand, now I make a return to stay more in my homecountry out of many reasons. I had enough of Thailand, but not finished. We still have investments here to care for, and my wife family. But if no thai wife, I would had been done with Thailand for good, and maybe Asia as well.

If I was on Uk state pention, I wouldnt think twice, if it was between Thailand or Phil, I would had chosen Phil any day. Frozen pension? Thats a robbery

From my experiences there, I would say a fair assessment.

Used to be fairly cheap depending on course of course but currently I don't know what the cost may be.  Before, I was a club member so got a discount at several courses.

I can't disagree about the diving, but even when i was very actively diving it was at best 2 weekends a month. And that is just not enough to over come all the many other short comings that I have found.

I do most of my own cooking but trying to find quality fresh produce/protein is a chore.

Most of the food is of the Ultra processed kind, You know the kind that the NIH is starting to realize is detrimental to overall health ane wellbeing

I wonder how many of you know what double dead even means when buying meat?

I really do not think we disagree on many things, especially food, where we grew and breed our own food as much we can in Thailand, and In Norway I fish, pick and conserve as much as possible.

Diving in Phil have seasons and moonphases and the current can be though many places, but as any sport connected to nature, you have to be lucky to be there at the right time and right place. I never cared about how many dives I got in, ski runs, as long I got those places I wanted to experience with the right people. Thats the beauty of it
