KannikaP Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 Please move to relevany Forum. Bought Zip Lock bags in Lotus this week. Just used one, and see it has a Use By date, 3 years, printed on them. WHY?
Etaoin Shrdlu Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 While they last hundreds of years in a landfill before they degrade, the manufacturer seems to think they need to be replaced after three when stored in a kitchen cabinet. What could possibly be at work here?
Phillip9 Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 Likely to comply with a regulation in some country. It's a food storage product and some country probably has a law that the manufacturer has to give it some expiration date and test that it works for that long.
gargamon Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 Expiration dates are mainly only applicable to dairy products, and tetracycline, which degrades chemically over time.
scubascuba3 Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 I bought some ceramic bowls a week ago from Makro they had a use by date 2029 1 1

The Ziploc sandwich bags I bought here in the U.S. don't have a "use by" date printed on the bag or the box that contains them.

Popular Post Gsxrnz Posted December 16, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 16, 2024 Call me a rebel, but "use by" dates are a socially engineered concept, and should be ignored. 3

Exactly so, all utilised by manufacturers to sell more products. I see sell by dates on jars of Honey, packets of salt, etc. All that is needed is common sense. By all means put a date of manufacture on products, and let the adult consumer decide. 1

statman78 Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 I retired from the company that makes Ziploc. In Thailand a use by date is required on almost all consumer products. Depending on type of Ziploc bag it was either produced in the USA or right here in Thailand. I’ve been to the factories here and they meet all of the standards that the US are required to meet.
