Disgusting cigarette smell from ur neighbour

Hi folks, I’ve moved to this condo in and I’m a non smoker.

I’ve chosen this property due to the view of the beach and sea breeze.

I have this neighbour below me that frequently  smokes and i can’t keep my windows open . The smell of the cigarette is just too disgusting for me

 

There’s no regulation in this condo about being  smoke free but wouldn’t one be more considerate of their neighbors if they are living in a condo instead of a stand alone house?

Anyone experiencing this ?

If no rules or  management to handle such issues, your best option is to move. 

 

Simple as that. If there where rules, you could try to talk to your neighbor, but then, well, it comes down to pure human factors and your neighbour think it is vice to quit smoking at his balcony or not.

Maybe you should work on your sensitivity to cigarette smoke.

If the smoke from one cigarette a floor below you on a balcony is enough to make you comfortable, then you are super sensitive - maybe mostly in your brain.

Try to accept it as part of life, like not so good air when you are near a street with vehicles.

You won't be able to change the world how it is. Get used to it.

As a smoker, I understand your position.

 

When I came to Thailand almost 15 years ago to assess retirement options - live which city/town, which part thereof, and rent or buy house/apartment/condo, etc. - the majority of expats I spoke with advised renting, and provided reasons why; with problematic neighbours being the main "issue".

 

In a country where laws, regulations and rules are all too often not enforced or enforceable, even in "gated communities", renting is an advisable option.  Thus, if you are subjected to very annoying neighbours, who are not going to change their behaviour, and do not care about others, you are free to seek alternative accommodation.

You’re kidding right? Why do you think hotels have non smoking rooms? And why many apartments and condos don’t allow smoking? Because most people don’t like other people imposing their filthy smelly stinky habits on them is why. Though those who don’t have basic self awareness, respect and common decency for others wouldn’t know this now would they?

I gave up around 16 years ago, but hate the smell of tobacco smoke now.

There's a huge difference in a hotel room that is smoked in and the smell permeates the furniture, bedding and carpeting and a person smoking outside on their balcony 1 floor below. To be able to smell that a floor above is stretch but it is their right to use their balcony. OP just needs to buy a fan and it should solve the problem

Those are all valid points if you live in the environment (household or closed environment) directly inhaling the second hand smoke. Outside in the open air you'd need to be inhaling the exhaled smoke almost directly to have any significant effect.

And these replies highlight why greater care needs to be taken when choosing accommodation... 

 

Yer neighbours could be smokers or mental cases....   

 

Its the same for weed, its quite pungent and spreads quite far if someone on the same floor or nearby is smoking.

When I 'sand-boxed' for two weeks in Phuket - the guy in the room below was a smoker, this prevented me from going out onto my balcony because of the fumes - he was there just a short time though so no big deal. 

 

Smokers have to smoke somewhere - but in area's of high living density, there need to be tighter controls IMO or it needs to be very clearly identified that the Condo is a non-smoking condo etc.

 

This is where vapes would come in handy for those who want to smoke in Condo's as the fumes are far less bothersome.

This is a prime example of why it's always better to rent a condo than to buy -- You never know when you will get a terrible neighbor, or the condo maintenance will drop.

No. While I also despise secondhand smoke if there are no regulations against smoking in these units, then no the neighbor has no obligation whatsoever to accommodate the sensitivities of the people around him. It is incumbent upon you to choose a unit carefully.

 

How you avoid problems like these, I don't know. But one of the issues with a condo is potential problems with neighbors. 

 

I honestly believe that humans were not made to live in such close proximity, so living in a condo or an apartment building in and of itself, could potentially be against the natural laws of the universe.

It is illegal to smoke in the common areas of condo buildings and outside within 8 meters of the entrance. 

However condo owners are allowed to smoke on the balconies of there apartments. 

Some owners with units to rent can let to non smokers and add a nosmoking clause to the lease.

How long does it take to smoke a cigarette 5 min?   Simply close your window for 5 minutes whilst he smokes, then open it again afterwards, job sorted.

So they should pack in the fags just for the comfort of a new tenant as opposed to you not moaning about their comfort?
