I’ve had similar encounters with him.

The cliche “the lights are on butt no one is home “ is an accurate cliche.

Haha...   those scientific polls of yours...   :cheesy:

MalcomB’s comments, though utterly objectionable and largely void of coherent thought, occasionally manage to scrape together enough of an alternative perspective to warrant debate.

You, however, don’t even meet that dismal standard. Don’t delude yourself into thinking you're anywhere near worthy.

hmmm.. the invocation of "honour"... what an misplaced concept.

Is there anything honourable about a pack of 4-6 thugs descending on a 66-year-old man like vultures? the notion of honour is ridiculous.

It’s almost comical, the mental gymnastics some engage in to absolve these brutes of blame. As if their excessive, violent frenzy could somehow be justified by a perceived slight or an unkind word.

Honour? Let’s call these guys what they are: thugs. Not misunderstood, not provoked, not righteous. just a mob of reckless degenerates who saw an opportunity to wreak beat an old man.

Had they had any decency they would not have smashed a car and beaten an elderly man.

Decency, honour - no... not at all - just thugs.

The Swiss guy more than likely shooed them off like stray dogs. Instead of just being civilized.

Some people take being insulted seriously. Especially in other cultures. You insult someone , they will beat the sh** out of you

An accurate statement.

Losing face is not popular in Thailand or most of Asia.

We were all young once. Just speaking for myself , if an adult was kicking us out of somewhere whether it was drinking or quadding , if they were decent about it , we never gave them trouble back. But if they were a complete prick , it was different. Don't be a complete prick. It's not worth it.

Agreed...   Worthy of smashing up the car and beating up the old guy ???

As pointed out earlier, there are some mental gymnastics being performed by some posters to normalise assault....

Was 'he' [the Swiss guy] a complete prick ??...   how do you know that ?

No. They went insanely overboard.

But it just puts home the point even more that you should never start or continue with an escalation.

Even the previous poster who said he started moving the barriers around his car himself. I wouldn't do that it a foreign country. It is an escalation. Just try and negotiate.

Yep...  I agree with that  (insanely overboard).

I also agree, never start or continue an escalation that could turn physical....

I have not read this - but, if so, what were barriers doing around his car ? - he'd parked in a wrong spot by mistake ?

What would you negotiate for ?...     what is being imagined here ?   Thug extorting him for parking and he refused to pay up ?...

I parked where I was legally allowed to park.

I had nothing to apologize for, but I did ask them to remove the barriers they had placed to prevent me leaving.

Then they assaulted me.

Pity you weren't around way back then to witness your first ever completely unprovoked attack.

Here's the story Richard

He later said he started to remove them himself and then they assaulted him.

Maybe he was within his rights to start moving them. But it was an escalation that I would have avoided until the cops arrived or something

Any idea why they'd barrierred off the car  ?

He'd accidentally parked in the wrong parking area ?...  An area reserved for 'customers to a different restaurant' etc ? owners called the thugs to make a point ?...

The Swiss man became indignant and tried to move the barriers out of the way so he could go home and that caused the escalation ????

Is this was is being said here ?  -  I get it,.. whenever in a new area on road side parking etc I ask local guards etc or nearby folk if parking where I am is ok (if here is someone around)...   There are often territorial disputes which can easily be missed by us.

I remember trying to park in Mae Sot and an good old dear was sat out the front of a shop, chairs and stools were placed out to block the parking - I asked the old dear if it was ok I if parked there for 20 mins...  she smiled and was fine about it. If she had frowned and grumbled someting I'd have moved on...

I parked today in an area with few places or what appeared to be a high 'real estate value on parking spots'... I just wound down the window and asked where is best to park... the guard pointed, so I went to that spot. Another guard game over and decided that was not the idea spot for my car and asked me to move to a spot 5 meters away - not a big deal - they may have their reasons - its not worth getting the car scratched while I'm away for 15 mins etc.

I know its about how these situations are approached - but returning to my car and seeing it surrounded with barriers is already an escalation - I'd have probably started moving the barrier myself too.

Just last week we went to park and there were barriers up, I got out and slid one across...  the parking attendant came, told me not that barrier / spot, he moved a different barrier and we parked in the space 'he wanted us to park in'...   Its just the way it is, no biggie in a normal world...    until the guys are aggressive thugs and jump to violence which is a massive excalation.
