Haha...   those scientific polls of yours...   :cheesy:

Yes science my friend ,please learn it

MalcomB’s comments, though utterly objectionable and largely void of coherent thought, occasionally manage to scrape together enough of an alternative perspective to warrant debate.

You, however, don’t even meet that dismal standard. Don’t delude yourself into thinking you're anywhere near worthy.

hmmm.. the invocation of "honour"... what an misplaced concept.

Is there anything honourable about a pack of 4-6 thugs descending on a 66-year-old man like vultures? the notion of honour is ridiculous.

It’s almost comical, the mental gymnastics some engage in to absolve these brutes of blame. As if their excessive, violent frenzy could somehow be justified by a perceived slight or an unkind word.

Honour? Let’s call these guys what they are: thugs. Not misunderstood, not provoked, not righteous. just a mob of reckless degenerates who saw an opportunity to wreak beat an old man.

Had they had any decency they would not have smashed a car and beaten an elderly man.

Decency, honour - no... not at all - just thugs.

The Swiss guy more than likely shooed them off like stray dogs. Instead of just being civilized.

Some people take being insulted seriously. Especially in other cultures. You insult someone , they will beat the sh** out of you

An accurate statement.

Losing face is not popular in Thailand or most of Asia.

We were all young once. Just speaking for myself , if an adult was kicking us out of somewhere whether it was drinking or quadding , if they were decent about it , we never gave them trouble back. But if they were a complete prick , it was different. Don't be a complete prick. It's not worth it.

Agreed...   Worthy of smashing up the car and beating up the old guy ???

As pointed out earlier, there are some mental gymnastics being performed by some posters to normalise assault....

No. They went insanely overboard.

But it just puts home the point even more that you should never start or continue with an escalation.

Even the previous poster who said he started moving the barriers around his car himself. I wouldn't do that it a foreign country. It is an escalation. Just try and negotiate.

Yep...  I agree with that  (insanely overboard).

I also agree, never start or continue an escalation that could turn physical....

I have not read this - but, if so, what were barriers doing around his car ? - he'd parked in a wrong spot by mistake ?

What would you negotiate for ?...     what is being imagined here ?   Thug extorting him for parking and he refused to pay up ?...

I parked where I was legally allowed to park.

I had nothing to apologize for, but I did ask them to remove the barriers they had placed to prevent me leaving.

Then they assaulted me.

Pity you weren't around way back then to witness your first ever completely unprovoked attack.

Here's the story Richard

He later said he started to remove them himself and then they assaulted him.

Maybe he was within his rights to start moving them. But it was an escalation that I would have avoided until the cops arrived or something

Any idea why they'd barrierred off the car  ?

He'd accidentally parked in the wrong parking area ?...  An area reserved for 'customers to a different restaurant' etc ? owners called the thugs to make a point ?...

The Swiss man became indignant and tried to move the barriers out of the way so he could go home and that caused the escalation ????

Is this was is being said here ?  -  I get it,.. whenever in a new area on road side parking etc I ask local guards etc or nearby folk if parking where I am is ok (if here is someone around)...   There are often territorial disputes which can easily be missed by us.

I remember trying to park in Mae Sot and an good old dear was sat out the front of a shop, chairs and stools were placed out to block the parking - I asked the old dear if it was ok I if parked there for 20 mins...  she smiled and was fine about it. If she had frowned and grumbled someting I'd have moved on...

I parked today in an area with few places or what appeared to be a high 'real estate value on parking spots'... I just wound down the window and asked where is best to park... the guard pointed, so I went to that spot. Another guard game over and decided that was not the idea spot for my car and asked me to move to a spot 5 meters away - not a big deal - they may have their reasons - its not worth getting the car scratched while I'm away for 15 mins etc.

I know its about how these situations are approached - but returning to my car and seeing it surrounded with barriers is already an escalation - I'd have probably started moving the barrier myself too.

Just last week we went to park and there were barriers up, I got out and slid one across...  the parking attendant came, told me not that barrier / spot, he moved a different barrier and we parked in the space 'he wanted us to park in'...   Its just the way it is, no biggie in a normal world...    until the guys are aggressive thugs and jump to violence which is a massive excalation.

Good advice but sadly too late for a lot of Pattaya farangs.

Was it not ONE Swiss man allegedly kicked someone off his property, and not MEN kicking DOCTORS.

Actually not, he rented and the steps were not on the property and illegally built. There was another incident involving a Swiss man very soon after that one, that seemed to cement in some negativity.

Why does that not surprise me?

Big mouth all brave slagging off but backs down if it could turn physical.

The poster child for a keyboard warrior.

We lead different lives. I have never backed down from a physical confrontation.
With the Thais I would never need to, they have good manners, as do I.

You are mixing the incident reported in the OP with a similar incident that happened to me almost 40 years ago in Pattaya. No barriers to parking have been suggested in the incident in the OP, but violence resulting from the victim parking in the "wrong" place has been mentioned as a possibility.

I posted about my incident to counter another member's earlier assertion that because he has never personally witnessed such an altercation in Thailand, the possibility of it happening is unlikely.

I hope this clears some confusion.

Of course you have Malc….  You’ll probably be very apologetic & polite after diving into someone while drunk.

& I’m more than happy to deescalate any possible confrontation that can get unpredictable & violent - only an idiot wouldn’t. I’ve nothing to prove to any of these violent thugs…

You’ve never backed down….  We have a new hard man in our midst… what was that you wrote about keyboard warrior again hard man ?

Says the farang apologist who has had in his own personal life close calls from upsetting Thai people which nearly resulted in violence.

if you think that these boys were not provoked in anyway and just decided to beat up an old farang you are dumber than I thought.

Thai's DO beat on farangs for no reason, especially the younger ones that are high on ICE or whatever...

I have personally witnessed such things over the years.

It's almost like a sport for them.

More imagined scenarios.

I have never had an accident drunk.

But you have backed down to Thais when you thought you were going to cop it.

You got yourself into an accident last week didn’t you?

Where are these barriers you just wrote as essay about?

Sure you have Bob.
Like your taxi driver story last week when you said you had no phone at the start of the story but had one to take photos at the end of the story.

If you don’t like it here then why don’t you leave?
People like you and Richard getting around with your attitude of looking down at the Thais with your made up stories are not good for the rest of us.

Leave, and take Richard and your Swiss mate with you.

With regard to MY incident, it has been suggested that by my attempting to remove the parking barrier, I was escalating the situation. The way I saw it at the time, by illegally placing the barriers to block my leaving, they had already escalated things. They were PROVOKING an escalation.

This was a classic case of a bar owner illegally blocking off the street frontage of their property, very common in many parts of Thailand and not exclusive to the bar business either. This was not a no-parking zone and the barriers they had placed, although belonging to the city or the police, had been stacked there after being used to block off vehicular access during an event at this bar the previous week. The street was open to traffic and parking.

I had parked outside this bar, but along with my friends, went to a bar directly opposite for about an hour. The bar I had parked in front of was double shophouse with steps leading up to a frontage shared by other businesses. I had not impeded customer access and indeed, his bar was already busy. It was only after returning to my car that I found my departure impeded.

The rest, as they say, is history and a valuable lesson learned.
