In that case, I'm guessing they were family of whoever owned the project.  Silly price of laborers.

I use to pay ex inlaws 500 baht a day, working on the house and 5X the normal rate back then year 2000.   Even others got 150 instead of 100 baht a day, as I wanted them to show up, and do a good job.  If not they got fired the 2nd day.

Worth the extra baht, as the listened, and did as instructed, and none of the, "OK, he's gone, we'll do our way as we always did before".  This way, it only gets done once :coffee1:

The group had valid tourist visas but lacked the necessary work permits. Despite their tourist status, they were being paid 450 yuan—or approximately 2,200 THB—per day for their labour.

And what happened to the employer?

Why would anyone pay that amount for just 'labouring' when the place is knee deep in Myanmar guys looking for work at 400B/day.

Sounds like a cover for scammers (speculation).

"working illegally as labourers ... the men were found demolishing a wall as part of renovation work ... they were being paid 450 yuan—or approximately 2,200 THB—per day for their labour".

All the info you needed is there in the OP!

Not necessarily.   They're demolishing a building, & renovating ?  The latter would take some skill, maybe :coffee1:

No matter, for what ever reason, someone thought they were worth the extra, and probably were, or, as I suggested, family ?

What's more telling is that they are prepared to pay significantly more than the going rate for local Thai labour.

Depends on where you live, but here East of Pattaya, I can't find any Thai that does repairs at my house and charges only 2200 baht for a full day

It doesn't say whether Bht 2200 each, or shared between the 5.

every time CH Embassy has repairs/fixing etc they almost always use CH labor. Not a biggie.

why hire locals to demolish the wall you cannot communicate with?

for those who doesn't know - the Embassy of China is there, a lot of shops and agencies. Huay Kwang looks like a little China, not a China Town of Yowarat

Of course they all had valid Tourist visas. When will Thailand ever understand what they are doing to the country and the people.

Yet no mention of the company/person that hired them being arrested for hiring illegal workers 😏

Tofu Dreg skillsets attract higher wages. 😋
