The Ubiquitous SAD Emoji: Still, I have no idea what it signifies.

Featured Replies

Please elucidate so that I and the rest of TV readers understand your meaning:

When you use the SAD emoji, what do you mean?

My guess is that there are very few contributors to TV who actually use the SAD emoji.

If you are one who uses this emoji:

Exactly what do you mean?

Do you mean that the writer is sad?

Do you mean that you are sad?

Do you mean that reading the comment causes you to feel sad?

Do you mean that you are feeling a bit glum?

I don't like the SAD emoji because it could mean almost anything.

And, IF it can mean almost anything...then....IMHO.....

It means nothing.

Or, does it mean something to you?

If it means something to you, in particular, than what does it mean to you, in any given situation.

Does it have more than one meaning for you?

How many meanings, for you, does this SAD emoji actually have?

And what are these meanings.

Thank you.

Gamma

Note: Help me to be less confused, please.

Usually can't bring myself to comment (lower myself) to such a poster. Though they are usually on my ignore list anyway, and I don't see much any more.

On the rare occasion I do use, I'll usually follow up, and place them on ignore list. It's getting long again, and AN is a really quick read now.

I do not think that would be possible given the totally pointless and confusing post you subject AN to!!

Your post above is a typical example!

One problem with allowing the average reader to have access to the SAD emoji is that they are not smart enough to use it intelligently.

In other words, if they do not understand the meaning of comments, then they just add a SAD emoji, seemingly at random.

And the writers have zero clue as to why.

In your case, I know you understand me.

Therefore, I do not mind if you wish to use the SAD emoji, as long as you use it both intelligently and sparingly, and you also find some other way to communicate your reasoning for using the SAD emoji, in each and very instance that you use it.

That is your belief, as I am well aware.

However, do you have any valid supporting evidence to explain your belief?

Because of the discrepancy in meanings, I dont use the sad emoji. Too many sad and confused posters posting sad and confused content

Generally it is a negative comment. The only other option is the confused emoji but I reserve that for illogical nonsense.

Or you have a poster who thinks he is a writer who is not. So the smart readers indicate to the not so smart poster that they think his post is simply sad. A waste of time and space.

My fav is when you destroy a posters stupidity and then all your posts, even ones that say "The sky is blue" get the sad emoji within two minutes

It’s just a bunch of bits and bytes cobbled together the gives an illusion of a notion:

😜

I will display 😜

I will display 😜

=😜
…is all that it is, it’s really nothing to get excited about.

Double meaning. Sad if someone died, for example, and sad if someone is being a sad sack. Children that continually apply it to each and every comment because they may not have agreed with someone 350 years ago should probably have emoti rights taken away. 🙂

I use it to tell the poster that I think it's sad to see another human being so lacking in common sense or intelligence. Where is the 'dunce hat' emoji? I'm sure some feel the same about me. I also use sad emoji for people that make rude or insulting comments without provocation. I'm currently working on a way to make them stand in the corner for an hour.

Why not try educating them?

There is nothing more effective for fomenting change than education.

No TV member is beyond redemption, at least in my view.

So, why not have an 'I disagree' sign? At least that would be clear.

All we need is a "disagree" symbol, as you correctly point out.

If the disagree symbol does not appear, then, by default, this will signify that everyone on TV agrees with the comment or Topic, by default, or that the comment/Topic is not widely-enough read by members.

This understanding is merely one of the fundamental principles of semiosis, something that most of us find absolutely fascinating.

With the abundance of trolls and people who just like to argue, I have neither the desire nor the time to invest in educating them.

It signifies that the person doesn't have an opinion they are able to verbalise but they don't like you or something you posted. Continues use of it is an invitation to join the ignore list......life is too short.

The solution is to provide each TV member with a maximum of Five SAD-arrows per month, in their quiver.

This, plus Five DISAGREE-arrows, should be sufficient for any normal TV reader.

As you do not know who is posting the emoji how can you put them on the ignore list?

Details....

Details.

how about replacing sad and maybe confused or all of them with a simple thumbs up or thumbs down...sort of says it all with no confusion...?

Actually quite an important detail!

I know that nine times out of ten it will be you because it's what you do, the other ten percent I just guess at. That's why you're going back on my ignore list right now, for probably the fifteenth or twentieth time.

Sadly, there are very few normal TV members.

Noooooooooo, an emoji can point, could be ...

"Good grief, I can't be bothered to reply to that cr@p"

"This bloke is an idiot"

"This bloke hasn't a clue what he's talking about"

Or on the other hand........

"Totally agree"

"That is very funny"

"Well said"

There are many things that those weeee cartoons can express without putting your real feelings into words that may get one into trouble....😋

You DO NOT KNOW what I do wrt to emoji(s)!

You do know what "assuming" does, don't you.

If I place a negative emoji I will normally follow it up with a post!

Find someone else to blame for your negative emoji(s), there not from me!
