Living the Thai life: Kingdom rolls out red carpet for big spenders

They forget what  the Expats that live here  do and spend millions on their GFs/Wife's not to forget all the money they spend on Cars/ Properties and houses/Businesses

« RICH and Famous » have their own playgrounds where they can dock their yachts and parked their jets. Among these playgrounds are West Palm Beach, St.Barth and a few other secluded Caribbean islands. Add a few Mediterranean hot spots, Ibiza, St.Tropez, Monaco, Costa Smeralda, Cinque Terre

as well as a few other private Pacific atolls and motus surrounding Bora Bora.

For years Thailand has been promoting cheap vacations, all included and now it’s difficult to reverse the trend.

Thailand has had loads of 5 star hotels for decades and they have been filled up pretty well.

That happened to me when I was recently flying out of Surabaya. A gov't person interviewed me with those type of questions.

I guarantee it was not a Thai official who asked you !

The negative thai hating chorus is all over this thread.

Thailand does a great job appealing to all budgets, all ages and all nationalities from budget accommodation to five star luxury resorts and staffed beachfront pool villas.

Which is why Thailand is the most successful tourist destination on the planet.

Funny that of all the countries in the world these haters have chosen to holiday and even live in Thailand and spend their spare time posting on a thai forum.

s'funny gurgle dunt agree with you France is the most visited country in the world, with over 100 million tourists visiting in 2023.

You will find most of them are from bordering countries and many illegal immigrants passing through to get to the UK.

I love Thailand, warts and all.

But when I think about inviting my well healed family to join me on one of my monthly visits, I wonder how they'd feel about the homeless people we'd step over, the dildo merchants we'd pass, and the "aromas" we'd experience in between all the high end opportunities to spend their sweaty tourist money.

Thailand needs to develop a pristine area (there are lots of them, but poor access) and keep the standards, instead of pandering to the lowest end of the budget spectrum.  But that's never going to happen if they aspire to $60K tourists spending 6,000-7,000 baht a day.  They need something more along the lines of Fantasy Island where a plane, helicopter, or yacht is the only way in and out...  To keep the likes of yours truly out.

So the problem with Thailand is dildo merchants and "aromas" isn't it? Well, well, well ... and poor me thought it was plastic refuse and dangerous road traffic.

Absolute BS. I have met quite a few of them: Boris Becker in his good times (multiple times), Jimmy White (multiple times), Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jimmy Page (comes here a lot).

Maybe you should change the places where you go.

Thank you for those four names. Where can I go in Thailand to see a few more 'celebrities' please.

But then many of them jump into dinghies and sail to Dover.

That's a list of washed up nobodies from the 1980's.

Becker - bankrupt criminal.

White- a successful snooker player, but hardly notable aside from his taking up with a young lady nearly 1/2 his age. I suppose it plays well  with the Pattaya crowd.

Van Damme - he would have been in his coke head phase when visiting Thailand. Great endorsement.

Jimmy Page -Another druggie, and while a hero to people from the 60's and 70's, no one under the age of 40 knows of him.

Absolutely unknown remains also, why a tourist cannot open a bank account and get an ATM card. There is zero risk for the bank as the ATM only splurges money as long as there is money on the account. But have it your way and carry on dreaming - or get real and welcome the 21st century of tourism business!

Unreasonable demand. Thailand has enough problems with money laundering. Try opening a bank account in  western  and north asian countries. Few banks will  allow it and when they do, there are tax id numbers or visas required.

This thread is about big spenders. Not the type who queue up for hours doing visa runs under pink umbrellas in the hot sun at the Thai Embassy in Laos.

They'd be better off embracing the low-end, and advertising it everywhere. Trying to chase a fountain of Gold could end up bankrupting them if it doesn't work out, and they would've already spent way too much trying attract them. Not worth the risk, they already have what they need to support the lower to middle-end of the spending crowd. In fact, it was working for years, they just need to do away with the nonsense of the ever changing immigration policies, paperwork, and harassment.

The thing is, they come up with this plan on a regular basis. If it worked these high end tourists would already be coming anyway.

They could look at making it easier for foreigners living here. It doesn't say how long these tourists stay in Thailand, but let's say 4 weeks, 28 days. If they spend at the top end mentioned, 7,000 baht per day, that's 196,000 baht. A foreigner living here and spending 537 baht a day would amount to 196,000 baht over the year. Plus they aren't likely to say to their wife and family "I've never been to the Maldives, we should go there next year. That would seem a much better option in the long term. However that would make sense so rather lacking in Thainess.

And i spend 2-3 times that in Thailand every year - but i am just a retiree.

Not unreasonable, common sense and convenient. To avoid money laundering, the banks could put a ceiling of X amount - money laundering is not worthwhile for a few hundred thousand Baht ......

I wasn't asking the price, simply the places.

Anyway, how do YOU know how much I have stashed away, I may have won the Aussie Lottery last weekend.

It requires administrative and regulatory filings. There is a good reason why banks  around the world  do not offer tourist bank accounts,
