SO who of you guys live in Thailand?
I was born and raised in the United States, but have lived in Thailand for almost 35 years. I last visited the USA 18 years ago, and have no desire to ever return. I have a family here and a nice home. I speak Thai more than I speak English most days. My best friends are Thai. I am acquainted with many expats, but would only call a few of them good friends. Interestingly, my closest expat friend is an Australian. -

The Looming Economic Storm in Europe
EU Commission, NATO, IMF are revolving door dumping grounds for failed national politicians. Can't hack it as a minister? Go and run an unelected supranational quango. -

Where is the best place to buy pork loin for roasting in oven?
When it comes to politics, people are not lying as much as that they have been lied to, that’s what is reiterated. -

Donald Trump Criticizes UK’s Windfall Tax and Wind Energy Policy
Sabre rattling at its finest. Apache operates Forties and Beryl, both fields which have been in production since the 70s; the fields are massively depleted and the very out of date infrastructure requires increasing amounts of maintenance. Back In the 90s I worked for a company which held a 0.15% stake in Forties. Being young and naïve, I could not understand why we would bother with such a small shareholding in such a minor producer, given the administrative and regulatory costs of doing so. I discussed it with one of the senior analysts and he explained to me that it was used as a write-off location for expenditure carried out on other facilities, because the Forties, being so old, gave massive tax benefits to its owners. It has been operating as a tax sink for decades. Interestingly. Apache's own website says this: "During the second quarter of 2023, as part of the Company’s focus on capital allocation to optimize investment returns, it suspended all new drilling activity in the North Sea. The Company’s investment program there is now directed toward safety, base production management, and asset maintenance and integrity." So that means no infill drilling and no reserves replacement - just produce as is until it can produce no more. I guess it has reached that point already. -

The Looming Economic Storm in Europe
there is a difference between socialism and social policies (support for the poor).. Immigration is what has destroyed Europe and I cannot see it helping the US... those on the left have supported immigration for all sorts of bizarre reasons and their justifications are factually incorrect. But going back to Thatcher/Reagan, immigration worked well for them as it broke the unions - excess supply of low skilled workers who are desperate to work - exactly what exists now. So those of the left and the right were happy and still are happy with immigration no matter what the longer term social costs are. Germany is now paying the price for this policy. We also have some sort of social idea that we must not upset anyone - I have caught chatGPT out on this where in one sentence it quoted mutually exclusive terms and when I pointed it out.. it throws out a meaningless apology, then repeats the same nonsense again - very dangers - just goes to how the dishonest bias which is programmed into it. But at a live person level, those of the left and the right play the same game to appease their voting base, then do what they (the leaders) own agenda dictates.. -

Dealing with existential boredom !
I'm 79 and been here almost 20 years. I don't have time to be bored; i have just spent the last six weeks painting the whole of the outside of our house (Bungalow) and there is now a stack of gardening waiting to be done. Apart from that i had a flood in the outer Kitchen caused by a rotten Washing Machine Waste Pipe, so it was off to Mr DIY to buy a new pipe and fit it while the Mrs sorted the flood. Next will come painting the Brick Built Shed that houses my Model Railway Layout and we go shopping at least once a week and out for lunch on another day. There will be two Holidays to other Countries this year; first already booked for Japan in March. Never been bored in my life thus far and don't intend to be; there is always plenty to do. I have one or two friends that moan about boredom but they are too lazy to do anything about it and seem to think that drinking is a 'Hobby' whilst talking about 'what to do'. I've always thought there are three kinds of people.....the 'Talkers', the 'Tryers' and the 'Doers' and i know plenty of the first category !
