That does make sense.  Though Mexico still has the most dominant coastline, in length.  About 100 kms more than USA, and Cuba having <400 kms of coastline with the Gulf.

Personally I don't really care.

It turns out that the government CAN change the name.

But that doesn't mean that the U.S. can compel people outside the U.S. to change the maps and use a new name as the Gulf of Mexico has stood for 400 years.

Perhaps a compromise?

Golfo de Estados Unidos? 

Also to say Gulf of America is not really specific enough.

The Americas span two continents.

There is only one Mexico.

Trump also intends to change the name of Mt. Denali which was changed under Obama from Mt. McKinley.

That old name was crappy as was President  McKinley who had nothing to do with that mountain.

The indigenous people's name was Denali. It's a beautiful name.

Actually, there has been a growing movement to have old sleepy Joe Biden's name removed from public property such as roads and other government property. I'm guessing trump is too dumb to realize that no one in Mexico will be offended by the change since in Spanish the USA is called Estados Unidos, and has nothing to do with America.  In every country south of the USA the term America refers to the continents and not the USA.

I think you are mistaken about his base.  Many Republican House and Senate members owe their seats to many of Trump's supporters.  Perhaps you have forgotten what party will be in the majority.  There are already some disagreements with Trump and there will be more.  Trump may be arrogant, but he is no fool.  He knows abandoning his base is dangerous and will compromise.
