A tense scene unfolded in Pattaya on the evening of January11, as a young woman attempted to jump from a pedestrian bridge, only to be rescued by a American bystander.

 

At approximately 17:30 rescue services and police in Pattaya responded to reports of a distressed individual attempting to leap from the pedestrian bridge near Sukhumvit Soi 53(Soi Nern Plubwan). Upon arrival, they discovered a 23-year-old woman, identified only as Ms. Wi, crying uncontrollably and standing precariously outside the bridge railings.

 

Despite efforts by authorities and bystanders to talk her down, Ms. Wi remained unresponsive. In a moment of courage, 38-year-old Mr. Joe, an American national who happened to be on the bridge, made the split-second decision to act, lunged forward and pulled the woman to safety.

 

Mr. Joe suffered minor injuries to his leg during the rescue, but he shrugged them off, explaining that he had noticed the woman crying and feared for her safety. “I tried talking to her, but she didn’t respond,” he said. “When I saw she was about to jump, I knew I had to act immediately.”

 

This incident follows a previous suicide attempt by Ms. Wi just days earlier. On 7 January, she reportedly tried to jump from a five-story commercial building in Pattaya’s Town in Town area (see link below). At that time, she was wearing the same outfit seen in today’s incident, and authorities were able to intervene before she could harm herself.

 

Police from the Pattaya City Police Station have since contacted the woman’s family, urging them to closely monitor her and provide emotional support. They emphasised the importance of addressing her mental health needs to prevent further incidents.

Same woman, another attempt only a few days later. She didn't get much help then!

oh dear ....  this nutcase needs help ....   put her away where she can't harm herself or anyone else.

If someone wants to die you can hardly prevent this person to commit suicide.

Why was Joe able to grab her and the Thai speakers couldn't?

Looks like deep depression. So many without jobs, too much debt and family troubles. I feel sorry for her.

Maybe time to give Ms. Wi the help and treatment she need, instead of just smiling and sending her back home.
