Suspected Human Smugglers Arrested at Tollway Booth in Bangkok
Picture courtesy of Matichon. Authorities on 18 January, arrested two men suspected of smuggling 10 illegal Myanmar migrants into Bangkok’s inner city, charging a fee of 1,000 baht per person. The operation took place at a tollway booth in Don Mueang, Bangkok. The arrests follow an earlier operation on January 6, during which Thai highway police and immigration officers apprehended 58 illegal migrants linked to a Myanmar migrant labour smuggling network. That raid occurred in Phatthana Nikhom district, Lopburi province, and involved the seizure of four vehicles, including pickup trucks and vans. Subsequent investigations led officers, under the direction of Pol. Maj. Gen. Worachat Saenkham and Pol. Maj. Gen. Chairit Anurith, to a suspicious Isuzu vehicle registered in Bangkok. Believing it to be linked to the smuggling network, the police monitored the vehicle’s movements and intercepted it at the Don Mueang toll plaza. Upon inspection, officers discovered the vehicle was driven by a 27-year-old Myanmar national, referred to as Mr A, while a 59-year-old Thai man, referred to as Mr Boonluem, acted as a navigator. The vehicle was carrying 10 illegal Myanmar migrants. Under questioning, Mr Boonluem admitted to organising the smuggling operation, claiming he was paid 1,000 baht per person to transport the migrants from Nakhon Sawan province to Bangkok’s inner city. Both suspects have been charged with “assisting and facilitating the illegal entry of foreign nationals into the kingdom.” The 10 migrants were also detained and charged with “illegal entry into Thailand.” The vehicle was seized as evidence, and all detainees were handed over to investigators at Don Mueang Police Station for further legal proceedings. Pol. Maj. Gen. Chairit Anurith, acting Immigration Police Division 3 commander, stated that the investigation remains ongoing, with the Royal Thai Police working to identify and apprehend higher-level members of the smuggling network. Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Tana Chuwong and Pol. Lt. Gen. Suraphon Prembutr have ordered intensified efforts to dismantle this operation. -- 2025-01-19 -

Nightclub Brawl Turns Deadly: Security Guard Shot After Breaking Up Fight
Picture captured from video. In the early hours of January 18, a fatal shooting occurred outside a popular nightclub in Kantharalak district, Sisaket province, following a free concert. The victim, identified only by the nickname "Boon," aged in his 30s and a resident of Ban Non Chomphu in Kantharalak, was the nightclub's head security guard. The alleged shooter, known as "Joe" is believed to be in his 20s and also a resident of Kantharalak. Eyewitnesses reported that the incident unfolded around 02:00, after the concert had ended. A group of youths became involved in a heated altercation outside the venue. The victim intervened in an attempt to break up the fight but was struck on the head with a bottle by the suspect. A physical struggle ensued before the suspect drew a firearm and fired three shots at the victim. One of the bullets fatally struck his heart. Friends of the victim attempted to administer CPR before rushing him to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Local police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who fled the scene and remains at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation into this incident continues. -- 2025-01-19 -

Strict Penalties for Forest Arson as Authorities Ramp Up Surveillance and Enforcement

Following a number of recent forest fires, authorities have issued a reminder that the act of setting fire to protected forests now carries severe penalties in Thailand, with individuals caught in such illegal activities facing imprisonment of 4 to 20 years, a fine ranging from 400,000 to 2 million baht, or both. Authorities have vowed to closely monitor and enforce the law rigorously against all offenders, ensuring no group escapes justice. Wildfires in protected forest areas are often caused by human activity. The destruction of valuable trees, which play a crucial role in sequestering carbon dioxide, accelerates the rapid depletion of forest cover. These fires also result in the loss of many animal lives and contribute to the generation of heavy smoke and PM2.5 dust, leading to adverse health impacts for local communities. Under the National Parks Act of 2019, Section 19, it is illegal for any individual to occupy, clear, or set fire to land within national parks, or to engage in any activity that degrades or alters the land’s condition. Section 41 further stipulates that illegal actions such as land grabbing and forest burning in national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and botanical gardens, are punishable by imprisonment from 4 to 20 years, a fine from 400,000 to 2 million baht, or both. Even though forest reserves may not be directly nearby, it is imperative that all citizens take responsibility for preserving the nation’s natural resources. Everyone can contribute to the conservation effort by actively raising awareness about the dangers of forest fires. This includes promoting education on the issue, encouraging efforts to stop forest burning, and protecting our environment, wildlife, and the health of all Thai people. Arrest Warrants Issued for Two Suspects in Deadly Narathiwat Bombing

Police in Narathiwat have obtained arrest warrants for two men suspected of orchestrating a deadly bombing and subsequent shooting that claimed the lives of a Border Patrol Police school headmaster and his son. The attack occurred on January 13, 2023, on the Sri Sakhon-Lubo Yiring Road in Sri Bunnapot subdistrict, Sri Sakhon district. The suspects detonated an explosive device targeting a vehicle carrying Police Lieutenant Colonel Suwit Chuaitewarit, the headmaster of Ban Tue Ngor Border Patrol Police School, and his son, Police Sergeant Major Dome Chuaitewarit, an agricultural instructor at the same school. Both victims were fatally shot after the initial blast, and their firearms were stolen by the perpetrators before they fled. Following forensic analysis at the crime scene, DNA evidence linked two suspects to the attack. On January 17, 2023, police issued arrest warrants for: 1. Mr. Abdulloh Bula, 40, of Chanae district, Narathiwat. • A high-profile suspect with 14 prior arrest warrants for violent acts, including bombings and shootings targeting officials. • Key incidents linked to him include the December 29, 2015 assassination of a subdistrict headman in Sukirin, ambushes on military patrols between 2018-2020, and a March 3, 2023 bomb attack on the Fourth Army Region commander. • Bula is believed to lead a group of 6-7 militants who retreat to the mountainous Moro Toe area between Chanae and Sri Sakhon after attacks. 2. Mr. Abdulloh Sameh, 30, of Rue So district, Narathiwat. • A subordinate of Bula, he is implicated in a January 16, 2023 bombing targeting Border Patrol Police escorting university lecturers in Sri Sakhon. Police Colonel Phatsavee Pochada, commander of the 49th Ranger Task Force, confirmed ongoing operations to apprehend the suspects. Search efforts have concentrated on suspected hideouts within an 8-kilometre radius of the crime scene but have yet to yield results. Authorities continue their manhunt for the suspects and have vowed to bring those responsible to justice while maintaining heightened security across the region.
