If you overstay but make it to the airport unscathed you pay 500 baht per day. If you are arrested when you are on overstay it is much much worse - off to IDC for you. So you were lucky, if you'd been in an accident or anything whilst on overstay you would have been in major trouble.

It just isn't worth the risk.

The reporter is being pretty cagey about not actually saying how many days this guy was on overstay.  I expect if it were actually only a "few", like 2 or 3 days, he would have said that.  My guess it was many more days than a "few"

Strange how there's harsh penalties for being caught as an overstay, but so many believe there will be no enforcement for the tax policy. 

 

They'll have to enforce it somehow.

Have you ever been in a jail? In the US? I have. For drunk driving. Gang members put a hit on me because they thought I was an informant, and I got out on bail just in time. The cops deliberately set your bail high so they can keep you jailed for a month until you get an arraignment and bail hearing. There are crooked guards that will put you in solitary if you cross them, with a light that's always on and one outdoor break for one hour every day. The beds are flat steel. It's not Thailand, but it's far from comfy. So if you're going to comment about the world, do your homework first and you won't embarrass yourself by sounding like an  ignoramus.

They do for those arrested here who are not on the way out at the airport!   What do you reckon the police do with arrested overstayers?   He wasn't in prison , he was in police cells and then IDC.

How long was the overstay?

 

Was he intending to leave, or just hoping to stay even longer on his overstay?

 

What other offenses, if any, had he committed?

 

How long had he been in Thailand?

 

Did he have sufficient funds?

 

So many questions, and so little time to answer them.....

I'd rather encounter a foreign over stayer than a drunk expat on the road.  

 

Funny how the over stayer is arrested, detained, and deported, yet the foreign drunk driver, even after an accident, just gets fined.  One is way more dangerous to the community than the other.

Agree.

He is using poetic license to create heightened suspense.

 

If the guy had been intending to leave, he would have been all packed and ready to go, rather than hiding in a public toilet where he alleges that he was beat up, and received what he suspected was a concussion to the brain.

 

Maybe the facts are not altogether what has been reported, simply because the actual facts of the case are not yet known.

 

Also, the guy should state his full name!

Cops don't recommend or set bail.   Judges do, based upon prosecutor's input.  Maybe you don't remember because of your condition.  So, you are recommending we all spend some time in jail ("do your homework") or shut our mouths?     Btw, I've done my homework (to adopt a phrase)..
