Correct. It seems to be beyond the comprehension of many members that the point of tariffs, beyond punishing the country involved, is to change supply chains. Thailand's loss could be a domestic agricultural boost for US farmers, or more likely a boost for other rice growing nations exports.

 

The only time it becomes a major problem for consumers is when the product cannot be sourced elsewhere.

India are like the Thai equivalent of a butterfly they will just join anything as long as it's good for them.

Again was reading something the other day the Japanese are actively rearming themselves from the pacifist nation they became after the war and who can blame them, the US mostly support them and China is only a few miles from them, and NK keep on testing missiles over them!

If the US only applied reciprocal tariffs and the same limitations on import control that Thailand does, then Thailand would collapse. Thailand has a $10 billion trade surplus with the US, while it has a trade deficit with China of about the same amount. If that $10 gets dented, then Thailand is in trouble. There is nothing that Thailand makes that the US absolutely must have.

Correct. I fear many members, especially the anti-Trump types of this forum, have no idea of the implications to Thailand of these potential tariffs. And the USA wouldn't miss a beat.

Hands in the air if you are working in Thailand (I don't work for the RD :)) or for that matter work at all, just in case any RD on the thread 🤣

If you have a business and are selling to the US then yeah that might be an issue, but reckon exporting from Thailand has many other options if advertising is done correctly, the US isn't the only country or market in the world that imports, also Thailand likes to be friends with everyone despite it's over military influenced government.

Let me help you - it was deigned a non-manipulator in 2022. No longer part of the 16 countries on the watchlist. However, it is examined every year and the Feds move it up and down according to Bank Of Thailand actions.  It is permanently watched.

I will never understand why Thailand joined BRICS! They are so dependent on the US and European market that joining BRICS was like throwing a stone in the head of Trump! I find the Thai government so ignorant at times.
