The US does grow rice already—very large, efficient farms.

Correct. It seems to be beyond the comprehension of many members that the point of tariffs, beyond punishing the country involved, is to change supply chains. Thailand's loss could be a domestic agricultural boost for US farmers, or more likely a boost for other rice growing nations exports.

The only time it becomes a major problem for consumers is when the product cannot be sourced elsewhere.

Maybe joining BRICS was such a good idea after all.

Which country are you referencing?   Why should their membership require 100% US tariffs on Thailand?

No, BRICS was formed after the USD was weaponised, other gotnwise to us bullying and hegemony.

Slapping economic sanction countries and people that don't agree to your demands is the the very definition of authoritarian/ dictatorship

Whatever the faults of Joe Biden and/or Donald Trump, I would much rather live in a world that their America dominated, rather than one in which Xi, Putin, Khamenei, Kim Jong Un, and even the dictator in waiting, Modi, exercised dominant power.

Because that was what Trump said he would do, if they didn't make a commitment to backing the dollar.

Hah, hah, hah, Thailand is not a BRICS member.

It's a BRICS "partner country" that wants full membership by this August.

It's a replay of Japan, Germany, Italy and the smaller axis partners, Rumania, Hungary, and even the Indian collaborators of the Indian National Army.

Man, you're going deep there, mentioning the Indian collaborators. Quite a few graves in Kanchanaburi could testify to that treachery.

Here's a question - what do you think would happen to Thai domestic politics if the USA imposed tariffs, and other nations followed?

The ramifications are immense.

India are like the Thai equivalent of a butterfly they will just join anything as long as it's good for them.

The rest apartfrom Japan are NATO.

Again was reading something the other day the Japanese are actively rearming themselves from the pacifist nation they became after the war and who can blame them, the US mostly support them and China is only a few miles from them, and NK keep on testing missiles over them!

If the US only applied reciprocal tariffs and the same limitations on import control that Thailand does, then Thailand would collapse. Thailand has a $10 billion trade surplus with the US, while it has a trade deficit with China of about the same amount. If that $10 gets dented, then Thailand is in trouble. There is nothing that Thailand makes that the US absolutely must have.

Correct. I fear many members, especially the anti-Trump types of this forum, have no idea of the implications to Thailand of these potential tariffs. And the USA wouldn't miss a beat.

I wonder how many hotshots in Thailand, even on this forum, work for companies here that would be devastated by tariffs. A little bit of the guffawing might be those guys getting ready for the unemployment line.

Hands in the air if you are working in Thailand (I don't work for the RD :)) or for that matter work at all, just in case any RD on the thread 🤣

If you have a business and are selling to the US then yeah that might be an issue, but reckon exporting from Thailand has many other options if advertising is done correctly, the US isn't the only country or market in the world that imports, also Thailand likes to be friends with everyone despite it's over military influenced government.

Going to get my Haribo's and Lays they let me out of my cell for all my defamation posts!

They truly don't understand the implications of 25% tariffs never mind 100%.

I'm in the habit of quoting "you'll get a lifetimes education from an uneducated rice farmers daughter."

Wait to you see her fathers reaction when his rice is tariffed out of the market. You'll get a real education on Thai domestic politics then.

Oh, dear oh dear oh dear. I knew you'd fall for that. You are so gullible its beyond belief.

Do you sincerely believe that Thailand was not under the economic watchlist during the Bush and Obama years too? I specifically mentioned 2005 and 2013. But - just to show up your level of stupidity - here's a link to Thailand being found a currency manipulator by Biden's administration.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/general/2101043/bot-shrugs-off-us-currency-watchlist-tag

You claimed Thailand has long been on the watchlist. In fact, it doesn't look like it has been on that list for several years:\

I can find on evidence that it is on the list for 2022 or afterwards.
