You want to change your false and misleading headline, as nowhere did I see any mention of 100% tariff, or TH even mentioned :coffee1:

Something like ... 'Trump not happy with countries joining BRICS'

Thailand will always be a 'hands off' country, as for now, one of the few USA friends in SEA.   He won't want to rock that boat, as TH doesn't need the USA at all.

Nothing that the USA trades with TH, can't be sourced easily elsewhere.

Try the little link that says Show More and you'll get this; "We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy.

hah, hah, hah. Thailand has an irreplaceable trade surplus with the US. It's not a friend, it's a Chinese colony. The Philippines is a US friend.

Edit:  now is see the 100% ... IF, they create or accept another currency other than USD....

This is what you link shows, so I don't know where that is, tho 100%, but notice TH still not mentioned.

Thailand is joining BRICS, isn't it?

Why is Thailand "hostile" to the U.S.? It has no intention of breaking ties.

It's joining BRICS. And Trump has just proclaimed any intent on the part of BRICS to weaken the US dollar a hostile action that will result in 100 percent tariffs and/or exclusion from exporting into the US.

As a 'Partner Country', so far.  Even if TH joined full on, they would still be 'hands off' for more than a few years.

Not like either country needs each other.

I think it's a real possibility.

If it happens I hope Thailand doesn't retaliate against American expats.

If that happens, I'll have to pull out my Canadian ball cap and lapel pin.

I understood that Thailand is joining BRICS but why would they agree to a new currency? I think they will not, knowing the repercussions.

Nope, just stating the obvious.

I hope TH & USA relations stay as is, or even better, get strained a bit, as the last I want, is a Thai FTA with the USA.   Would mean nothing but higher prices in TH.

The sun is rising in the East! Can The Don not see that? Or, is he simply being poorly advised.

It's not enough that they just don't agree. They will need to make a commitment, according to the posting: We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency,

Maybe people have awakened in DC and aren't waiting for another Pearl Harbor this time.

I think the 100% is scaremongering, Starmer has made his postition clear on bowing to the US even if he needs to sort things out like immigration policies, it will likely be 25% like most other countries including the UK.

Even 25% would still screw Thailand up to the tune of over $4 billion

Possibly. No, maybe even likely. But I still like to see it, because it ought to scare the bejabbers out of the Thais who have been quietly undermining US interests through things such as openly inviting Chinese companies to set up in Thailand to evade US sanctions and restrictions.

Make you right there John.

The 'West' is 12% of the land mass, 13% of the people and an estimated 6% of the world's resources.

The 'non-West' holds 80% of the earth's gold.Time for a change?

I doubt that a pledge of servitude will come but rather the BRICS countries will agree among themselves not to adopt a central currency.

Like most things Trump, its effect is unpredictable.

I agree for sure with that and I doubt Trumps target would directly be Thailand in particular it would more than likely be anyone showing support to China like you said.  He (or his administration) have tried to do the same to the UK if they don't pick a side between Europe and the US (as much as I disagree with a lot of Starmers policies he has rightly essentially told him to F off) all playground type stuff if you ask me!

BRICS is one thing, baht manipulation could be a future issue. As I recall last time, his economic people were looking into which currencies were being manipulated against the dollar.

It could be good for us.  China does this sort of thing all the time. They use tariffs and import inspection slow-downs to get their way with countries such as Australia, South Korea, and Japan. And I remember the government apologizing for the nation a few years ago when a Thai immigration officer slapped a Chinese tourist. China takes care of its people and its interests. Why shouldn't the US do the same?

It's a negotiating tactic.  They call it strategic ambiguity, and it kept Russia out of Donbass and Hamas in Gaza on his watch.
