Work Permit

Featured Replies

For example, your school is asking you to resign for the year 2024 because they have to process the work permit. Your work permit is about to expire (for example, on 28 Feb 2025). Does this kind of thing really need to be done if we are continuing in the same school?

By processing the work permit do you mean extending it? I couldn't imagine why you'd have to resign because I would be of the belief that the whole process would have to start over. Maybe they're just trying to get a resignation out of you? Are you on good terms with them or do you think you are?. Every year when my work permit was a week away from expiring it was just renewed from the solicitor that handled our company business never was asked to resign until a new one was issued seems kind of fishy but then again maybe schools are different

This doesn't make sense.

I mean extending it. Everything seems to be good but the school is doing this kind of stuff with few teachers.

I have extended mine many times, at no time was it asked that I resign so they could renew.

Iam not employed in the teaching game though.

There is no requirement to resign to renew the work permit and extend the permission to stay.

Perhaps your school has either made an error (and resigning would be the way to fix it) or has come up with some idea (and needs you to resign to put it into effect). You will need to ask them.

If you do resign, do you trust them to re-employ you? Also it may effect any redundancy pay you may be due.

Maybe they're trying to avoid a salary increase after a years employment by starting you off again?

They are giving us employment again. Just that they just wanted us to resign to renew the work permit, which they say every school in Thailand does it now.

unless processing of the taxes of that employee for 2024 which is taking place now and the school is probably involved...don't really know but reading of corrupt policies regularly here, it just makes me wonder.

Thank you for all the valuable information.

I thought too. Is it related to Tax?

No, they are trying to avoid severance pay when they don't want you anymore.

From what I've heard, most of the foreign teachers don't even have work permits - probably becuase the lesser-known schools don't want to shell out the costs of the work permits each year. You might be working for a bettter established school though. (I'm not a teacher, but I've heard this many times, and I see there is another 'crackdown' happening).
