Even now if I take my wife to visit her family I leave home at day break. I refuse to drive long distance at night. Thailand roads are dangerous to drive at night especially on the poorly lit roads and mountainous regions. Double carriage trucks are a menace to other drivers on twisting mountain roads ( chiangmai to lampang) because the rear carriage would swerve to the centre of the road when taking the corners.

It was nuts.

Gknrd Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Terrible, I was on a bus from BKK to Southern Thailand a few years ago. The driver was insane, driving so fast and reckless. When the bus stopped one Thai lady came down and started hitting the driver and the rest of us did not get back on the bus.
kwilco Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Usual litany of rubbish and racist nonsense from the ignorant road safety Sherlocks. Every crah and incident is followed by th same torrent of ignorant comments. 1

Georgealbert Posted February 26 Author Posted February 26 UPDATE Relatives of Bus Crash Victims Search for Missing Valuables The bus recovered to the police station. Chaos ensued as relatives of the victims from the bus crash searched for missing belongings, including diamonds and approximately 10 baht weight of gold, believed to have been stored in a handbag. On the afternoon of February 26, authorities brought the bus involved in the crash to the police station for further investigation. Families of the victims arrived to inquire about their loved ones’ belongings. Some relatives reported that valuables were missing, leading to heightened distress amid an already tragic situation. One relative shared that the deceased had valuable items in their bag, including a mobile phone, approximately 10 baht of gold, diamond rings, and important documents. These items were typically carried in a small handbag, which has yet to be found, with only a large bag of clothing located so far. Officials are currently conducting a thorough search for the missing handbag and the valuables reported lost by the victims’ families. They are also inspecting the bus for damage and potential recovery of lost belongings. The situation remains stressful as families hope to recover their loved ones’ possessions amidst their grief. -- 2025-02-26
bunnydrops Posted February 26 Posted February 26 If you have seen the framing of those buses to keep the weight down you would not be surprised that the undercarriage crushed the upper carriage in a rollover.
Ralf001 Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Why would one carry 10 baht of gold on a 5 day study trip ?

It is the speed limit (120), and as long as doing 100+, then it is what it is. They do less than 100, and yea, that's annoying. If the roads good, I'll do 110 ish, and that's on hwy #4, only a few short stretches, and at times, I've seen the 'frontage' rd moving faster
delgarcon Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Apparently 4 people have been killed in a minivan crash, not yet reported

Do 100 in the RH lane... FAFO. 1

Most of these victims will sadly not appear on the statistics as they will be declard death AFTER arriving at the hopsital. The death declaration will be signed by a doctor at the hospital, not on the road or during transport to the hospital.
Confuscious Posted February 26 Posted February 26 And Thailand want to have high-speed trains. What a joke Thailand is.

cardinalblue Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Driver fatigue is not the same as driver error which seems to be omitted as potential causes…can never be the driver’s ability or lack of

Yes it's well known for driver's to be taking (yabba). My wife is constantly reminding me to keep away from lorrys and busses for this reason. Combined with very poor testing facilities when getting a license.
mikebell Posted February 27 Posted February 27 22 hours ago, watchcat said: Nothing wrong with the roads it's the drivers. A police force would enforce the eradication of bad driving habits. When seatbelts were first introduced in UK, it took a number of years of police enforcement before it was generally accepted. Ditto car phones. If RTP allow the needless daily deaths from speeding/red light running/drunk driving, they are culpable.

Not much difference from the USA, and actually I feel safer when on my scooter in TH, than I did in the USA. I am the exact opposite, I found that driving in America, my car, not motorbike, in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Nashville etc etc was much safer than driving in the UK, and the drivers more courteous. I won't mention driving in Thailand.
