Bangkok is seething with anger after a video capturing cruise ship staff dumping trash into the Chao Phraya River went viral. The video, shared by Carla Porter, Miss Thailand World 2009 runner-up, has sparked outrage and scrutiny.

 

The footage, recorded secretly by a friend of Porter, shows the crew hurling plastic bottles and foam boxes into the river. According to Porter, this isn’t a one-time incident. It happens daily, and when noticed, the crew attempted to conceal their actions by moving behind another docked ship.

 

“It's shocking that a company benefiting from the river could also be destroying it,” Porter commented, suspecting that higher-ups might be involved, not just the staff.

 

The scandal has led to an avalanche of criticism on social media, with environmentalists and residents demanding swift action. Tos, who manages a restaurant along the river, confirmed the dumping practice, having witnessed it multiple times himself. Frustrated by frequent floating trash and its stench affecting his business, Tos recorded the incident.

 

 

Tos remarked, “Instead of using a proper bin, they just toss trash before picking up passengers to maintain a clean front.”

 

Furious citizens flooded the cruise company's Facebook with calls for accountability and criticized management. The Marine Department has launched an investigation and promises penalties if the allegations hold true.

 

Attempts to reach the cruise company failed, as calls were redirected to a ticket agency denying ownership. As pressure mounts, the incident has reignited discussions on corporate responsibility and environmental ethics in Thailand. Environmental groups are pushing for stricter laws to protect the iconic Chao Phraya River, reported The Thaiger.

Most Thai's view their environment as a toilet, look at the waterways and empty lots full of trash. Wonderful "Culture"!

These kinds of crimes are an abomination against nature and the environment, and they should find the owner of the cruise ship and put him in prison for 50 years or the remainder of his life. It might send a message.

 

Unfortunately this kind of thing is happening with container ships and cruise ships all over the world, all over the high seas. In general we have no respect for this planet and we're behaving as if we have nine alternative planets we can move to, once we completely trash this one. 

 

We are certainly doing a good job of trashing this one, and it's just further proof that mankind is devolving, and we've been moving backwards for at least the last 30 years.

Looks like river cruise, not sea cruise liner, so Thai owner polluting their own river.

Remove the vessel from the river, remove it's operating license and jail the Captain as he has the highest authority and must be held responsible.

Well, the trash is going down the river and wouldn't affect the people in BKK anymore.

However, a couple of days later I am swimming in these rests of culture. Horrible.

This would make a good topic for Bangkok to address and tackle a long term solution for garbage disposal.

 

I'm sure there are more expenses and challenges than I realize.

Thai behavior. Look at the garbage on the beaches, on the paths in national parks and on the roadsides all over Thailand.....out of sight, out of mind!

My Thai girl friend used to order the cockles shellfish at the eatery, I explained they come from the mouth of the Chao Praya River which is Bangkok's Open Sewer, they feed off the mud & water that is full of industrial waste, street runoff & sewerage and it's going into your body.

She smiled & kept eating.

Unfortunately, this just shows the Thai mindset concerning disposal of garbage. Makes no difference if it is on the river, side of the road or in the countryside.
