The US gold reserves, at $2950 per ounce (last week), are worth around $750 billion. All the world's above-ground gold reserves add up to about $19.4 Trillion. The US national debt is about 37 trillion, and the Global Debt is estimated at around 102 trillion. There's not much hedging going on.

Sorry, I don't see how your first statements are connected to the last.

 

As governments print more money to cover debt, the price of gold goes up. People and central banks buy gold to protect themselves from a currency decline in purchasing power.

 

Currently, the biggest gold buyers are China and India. Poland has become a big purchaser in 2024.

 

I have never met a Pole, but the Chinese and Indians I have worked with were all pretty smart people.
