Phuket is not Thailand anymore

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

I have lived in Phuket before and probably one of the first places I ever loved in Thailand but been here for a couple of days for the first time in quite a few years.
While my Thai language is not brilliant it is usually conversational and most people here could not understand me, when I delved deeper they were actually from either Myanmar, Vietnam or Cambodia with a worse command of the Thai language than me.

This is definitely not Thailand any more the only good thing was I didn't meet any Russian deserters or that would have destroyed my weekend break totally.

To the mods this is definitely not a dig at any Thai provinces or places just a personal observation of how things have changed and I will probably choose different locations in the future for small domestic breaks but thought I would have a whine on AN as I am sure a few members probably live down this neck of the woods.

Rubbish. There are loads of places in Thailand that are nice to live in.

  • And 10-20 years from now, those that are arriving now will write a post somewhere complaining that Phuket is not the same as it used to be and they will be longing for the good old days in 2025.

I can't remember if it was a Chinese sage or a Buddhist philosopher who said it: "A disappointment is an unfulfilled expectation"

In other words: what did you expect of your brief visit to Phuket?

Yep, lots of Thailand is not the same.

Pattaya same definitely not Thailand, too many foreigners. Sadly, it's not the place it used to be.

Loads of miserable, moaning, angry, psycho foreigners.

If you are looking to relocate to Thailand, you've left your run too late.

Expect disappointment.

Agreed.

I first came to Thailand in 1974 - travelled to most provinces over the next 6-7 years.  It was a great experience.

Everything has changed, everywhere, not just Thailand.

You are soo right! Unfortunately nothing new, as it has been gone for more than 3 years.

Stop with your hostility. 😡

You are a typical expat that is here now, bloody hostile. Where did I say that there weren't loads of nice places in Thailand?.

Keep your anger to yourself.

I said you've left your run too late

Sorry for those arriving now, it's not the same it was.

"Stop with your hostility"  the pot said to the kettle. 555.

You said, and I quote, " If you are looking to relocate to Thailand, you've left your run too late.

My reply is you are talking rubbish. There is a plethora of places in Thailand that are miles from disappointing, even if arriving now.

No hostility. No anger, from me anyway.

The only I was in Phuket was during COVID, came in during the sandbox program. It was ok enough then even so clearly an area totally dominated by tourism. I shan't be retuning.

I went to Koh Samui for the first time last year in January and I didn't see a single Thai tourist, only Europeans and maybe a couple Chinese. Indeed even much of the staff was Burmese but there were also Koreans and Indian manned business. Didn't feel like Thailand and was bizarre honestly. I shan't be returning.

There are large zones in Chiang Mai which are now totally dominated by tourists and Thai's largely avoid now.

Maybe the worst tourist ghetto I've seen in Thailand though is Pai.

So yes, mass tourism has displaced Thai culture in a many areas now.

Maybe but still 99% of the country has basically no tourists. Problem is 95% of people go to maybe 5-7 locations and totally overwhelm them.

I'm in Pattaya for a few weeks.  I went to buy a kebab from the corner shop by the school on 2nd road.  I looked at the young female serving girl. "Mingalaba" I said "jada" (which means chicken in Burmese).  The girl almost fell off her chair in surprise 🙂.  I recognised her complection and facial shape as typically Burmese.

I went to buy some clothes from the market stalls opposite Central Shopping. There was no serving assistant to be seen, but her mobile phone was on the table and playing.  "Mingalaba" I called out.  The serving lady came running out in amazement. "How did you know I'm Burmese?" she asked in good English.  "You mobile phone is playing Burmese Buddhist chants" I replied 🙂

I guess the vast majority of stall and shop assistants are from Myanmar, because their knowledge of spoken English seems way better than most Thai people.

Yeah, but the way it is now will be the way they first experience and fall in love with it. And that’s what they’ll be nostalgic for in ten years, when it changes even more.

Phuket is the greatest success story of Thailand, the Burmese that you spoke to were only service staff.
The owner was likely Thai but had probably had his fill speaking with foreigners.

Phuket has the highest wealth per person and the highest minimum wage.

They are accused of price gouging but the people keep rolling in so really that is good business, demand and supply.

Phuket is also very nice for us well heeled, the best choice of restaurants outside of Bangkok but not a place for those on a budget. I paid 350 baht for a plate of seafood fried rice yesterday for lunch in a beach club. The place was full. It was very good but the same thing in Bangkok would have cost me 80-100 baht.

Phuket has created thousands of USD Thai millionaires.

Good on them. They deserve it.

Service was probably better.

The Thais that end up in the service industry are not exactly high achievers.

He's not being hostile. He's just stating an opinion.

You seem to be too easily offended. And apparently you must be like that in real life too.

No one is forcing you to spend 15 hours a day in bars with other expats.

If you don't spend 15 hours a day in bars with other expats, Pattaya is a nice Thai city with some lovely Thai people. There may be better places to live, but it's not what you describe. A bunch of angry expats. Just stay out of the bars.

Spent 3 months in Phuket as a back packer in 1979 when the journey from Phuket town to Patong was an adventure over tropical hills and Bangla Road was nothing but a little empty dirt road. Went back many times but gave up Phuket 20 years ago and never looked back, just another tourist trap.

Personally, anywhere that is set up to attract tourists,  in big numbers, does not reflect the true nature  of a country,  they attract the wrong people, scammers, illicit activities, sleazy attractions, thieves, over pricing, corruption, non cultural entertainment, etc

I received the proverb "A disappointment is an unfulfilled expectation" once in a fortune cookie in the U.S.

I lived China for ~20 years and never saw a fortune cookie.

"""If you are looking to relocate to Thailand, you've left your run too late.  Expect disappointment."""

Garbage in my opinion.  It boils down to

1) LOCATION, LOCATION and LOCATION.

2) YOUR LIFESTYLE

I'm 80, in general I want a more laid back LIFESTYLE  and AREA to live.

I'm in KORAT, we live in a semi-gated community, great landlord, friendly neighbors, 20 minutes ( by car ) from downtown. 2 other mixed  farang families in 30 house complex.

Have a 2BR house, indoor kitchen, AC, fenced yard, 2 portches, garden, 3 trees and etc.

Pay 4500bt rent plus utilities that average 4000+/- including 5g WiFi fiber cable TV, and 2 mobiles.

Banana tree ( loaded ) in yard.

4 major stores, Immigration, mom & pop stores, 7-11, temple ( for wife), free fishing lake, park all within 2 to 15 minutes of front door -

bought a electric tricycle for local travel.

Relatives - in laws, visit all the time ( we are basically half way between HER home village and BKK )

We go "downtown"  Korat several times a month, 1x to bank, and general shopping trips. (260bt round trip average by grab)

Temple has non religious activities 2 weekends a month. Concerts at local socker field weekly.

Friendly soi dog visites us often along with 3 cats - we keep water handy for animals - feed sometimes  the leftovers.

It stopped being Thailand MANY years ago!!! They should build a wall against it!

Phuket stopped being Thai at least 12 or 15 years ago as far as I am concerned, which is why I haven't been back for a similar number of years.

Far better places on the coast to enjoy than that over priced, peopled, over everything place

1000s of refugees from Myanmar living in a number of slums. See the backside.

Although i can understand to a certain degree maybe not liking Phuket because of the overcrowding during high season.  To not like somewhere in Thailand because none of the staff were from Thailand is a bit of a strange thing to pick out. Even if the staff were Thai most of them probably wouldn't be actually from Phuket So, I don't see how  where the staff come from is relevant to liking or disliking somewhere.
