Songkran 'can be' fun.
If you have kids, it's a delight to watch them play.

With a group of friends, it can be a blast, especially for tourists.

Get drunk enough, and it's an mobile party! At least until the fighting starts.

But after 25 years of it, I'm done. Take away the blocks of ice and I'd consider an hour or two of it again. That's enough.
I hope those who want to play enjoy the holiday.

Pattaya must be the worst area I hear quite a few expats go away for the week

That is what I do.  Stock up with bottled water (I wouldn't dare drink tap water and neither do my Thai friends) and food.  I manage to stay occupied with book reading and  watching movies and shows on the TV.  My Thai companions, of course, go out usually each day to Enjoy!  Delivery services are generally available except on the 18th & 19th in Pattaya - especially the 19th - bumper to bumper traffic on all the main roads - and lots of splashing.

Oh yes.

Teaching them to throw water at people.

Later on, to use fireworks on a fun celebration day.

And then wonder how come they have no physical activity to keep them healthy later on...

 

Even cycling, reserved activity for the few...

Bicycle parking at the new Robinson store. Always empty. Always. Only motorbikes. These people learn to use the motorbike to go the the store 100 meters away...

I don't hide at all, up here in rural Isaan it's very authentic and a enjoyable experience with family and the locals.

 

3 days and it's all done and dusted for another year.

Typically, I just stay at home.

If friends are in country I may meet up for a few hours water fight one afternoon but thats bout it.

I did Bangkok twice and Pattaya once. Thats enough.

 

Last year, the day after, for some dumb reason I walked down Sivutha Road in Siem Reap and when I neared Pub Street in the heat of the noonday sun, the waves of urine stench just washed over me. They were using high pressure hoses to clean up. Gross.

 

They are having events at Angkor Wat, it should be more sedate and I might go

Luckily, here on Samui, it is only one day.

Tourists have been trying to extend that into day two but the locals have soon sorted them out.

I don't. Where I live in Bangkok Songkran is a quiet affair. It is the tourist areas that are the problem.

I stock up on groceries in advance and stay home till it's over.  Not just because of the annoying water throwing (actually not a big  issue in my immediate surroundings) but on account of the drunk drivers/unsafe roads.

Agree, also the eight days in pattaya is only in bar areas except the last day , Wan Lai when everything goes crazy.

Three years working in Pattaya, never got wet during my 20min MC ride to work except Wan Lai.
