Are you ready for smartphones to become obselete?

Apparently this will happen in about ten years or even much sooner.

Most of us I presume have adapted to smart phones becoming necessary to exist.

This was generally harder the older you are and obviously super easy for digital natives.

But how do you feel about the next step?

Personally I've had enough. I would be happy to see smart phones get better and better, especially more secure, but don't want to ever give them up.

I do not think you will have to give them up. Yes glasses will have advantages, but phones will have advantages the glasses can never provide.

 

Much like there was radio and tv i suspect there wil be AI glasses and phones. One will not kill the other.

Exactly. Apple will want to sell you both. Along with a Mac, iPad, AirPods, HomePods etc.

why do you say this? Smart phones are just a computer with a touch screen and cell receivers. People don't want glasses or any other silly nonsense. This has been tried many times now and people don't want it.

I'm not sure, AI glasses have advantages over phones in some circumstances, basically related to instant translation and info, built in speakers and other things that make using them easier than smartphones. I can see AI glasses being a success. I just don't think they will replace phones altogether because glasses can't ever provide some of the advantages of the phones.

I agree with these two.  Wearables aren't that popular (e.g. VR and the apple thing).  Even smart watches are just gimmicky.  The thing is, it's all about the screen.  Phones got a lot smaller, then got bigger again when people wanted touch screens and to play movies and games.

 

I know it sounds a bit "everything that will be invented", but people still like tablets and laptops.  The fact that these haven't been replaced by phones, and phones haven't been replaced, speaks volumes.

 

Unless they can come up with something that goes directly into the brain and creates something that looks exactly like reality, I can't see anything changing soon.

I doubt that a direct connections to the brain's optical processing areas will be developed in the near future.  We will be stuck with carrying around some form of screen for decades.

 

Conceivably almost all processing could be moved off your personal device to centralized servers.  AI prediction and data caching could be used to reduce response time.  The reduced hardware requirements would result in smaller and cheaper devices but a more expensive infrastructure.

 

You would still call it a smartphone.

I only own one because the volume is louder and I am partially deaf.

No apps or wifi on it.

My lap top is much more secure and does more. (Try multiple screens on a phone?)

A lost laptop is a much greater security exposure than a lost (up to date) phone.  A phone can do a lot more than a laptop in many situations.  Can your laptop automatically execute a procedure when you take it to a specific location?  The hoop jumping required to accomplish that on a laptop becomes complicated.

Not me. My phone is over 20 years old and does what I need- lets me talk to other people.

 

End of the year I'll be forced to buy a <deleted> phone as they will not support whatever makes my phone work, though I will only be using it as a phone, and no <deleted> aps.

I can understand that you have no concept of how an individual can protect their data.  But, it is not difficult for those with technical skills.  Most data breaches are due to social engineering such as phishing and spoofing.

If you think the people that designed the things can't access everything that they can get hold of I have a bridge for sale.

Doesn't worry me as I'd never do anything on a machine connected to the internet that I would want to keep private.
