Quite, but it should be borne in mind the law is in respect of identity, also applies to Thais, it is not an immigration requirement.

Irrelevant, it's the law, no matter who asks fo it, and if wanting to avoid a fine or sitting around where ever, till some brings it to you, then simply carry it.   As stated, for me, PP with me is the safest place for it.  I don't lose or have stuff stolen from me.

Hotel is the last place I'd leave it, if O&A.  Car would be safer, but many don't self drive.  It's in my bag, next to my wallet, yellow book & bank book, along with my phone.   Not weighing me down, and simply too easy to carry with me, and keep safe.

Looks as good at the 10 yr mark as when issued, since in a plastic sleeve and only comes out at the bank or Imm office.

Of course it is relevant, it is a proof of identity law, nothing else.

What is not relevant is how you, or anyone else, looks after their passport.

But we're in Thailand where the law is optional.

Agree.   I don't carry because it's the law, as I think I've been asked for it once, in 25 years, and that was at a check point by military personnel.  Thought that was kind of strange, of all folks to ask for it.    I carry it since safest place for it.

OP did ask if required to carry.

I carry mine in a leather passport wallet, been doing so for 9 years, though I wish the world would just move to a plastic ID card (CC size) for passports, no more stamps needed (store stamps electronically online).

I was once asked by a man in brown in the middle of Bangkok if he could see my passport.

I started arguing with him in an entirely made up language, blending bits of Spanish, Italian and French together..

He couldn't wait to get rid of me.

What is the actual law on this ?

Never mind any rules or laws on this. Common sense tells you that you only take your passport with you if you are going to some place where it is required ie bank, immigration.

Like he said, make a few copies of the passport face page and visa page, trimmed, and carry in your wallet just in case anything happens or you're asked by police, which sometimes happens, especially at road stops.

You only time you need to show your passport if asked, is if the police officer is above a certain rank. Don't ask which one as there are that many, most bought and paid for.

I'm not sure what the actual law is, but I carry a photo of my passport, including the pages with my visa, visa extension, and 90-Day report in my phone. I've never been asked for these by a government officer. I do have to have my real passport to get a new bank book and other things at my bank. That's the only time I know I need to actually have it.

It is not April the first yet so why so many stupid posts on AN today?

and I refuse to show it even at the bank when they ask for it.

How silly. How do you expect the Bank workers to do what they have to, if their rules say a copy of passport is needed. My bank must have 100 copies, I know it's daft but, them's the rules.

QR code leading to the page with all relevant pictures. very handy though.
Before it I exactly what many done - laminated 50% reduced size copies in the wallet.

I'm not looking for policeman in the wrong mood to argue "show me the exact article regarding my passport"

Since 1997 only 2 times been asked "may I see your passport?" but why to rebel?

I consider it stupid as it has nothing to do with a topic regarding carrying passports?

It is to do with carrying passports, read my post again. I said that only policemen above a certain rank can ask to see your passport. I am not saying that is what happens, I'm only saying that is the case. I am not debating this post with you any further. I do not mind anyone disagreeing with my posts, but don't call me stupid while hiding behind your keyboard.

How silly of you.

I wrote that i never showed my passport, except perhaps when I opened my bank account.

And I wrote that they always end up doing their job.

These are facts. And facts do not care if you think these facts have happened or not.

They did happen.

OK, so your experience is different to mine. But NEVER and EXCEPT in same sentence do not agree.

I think most Thai bank staff will need to see and copy your Passport or Pink ID card when doing anything.

Have any other members got things done in a Bank without Passport or ID card? And if so, HOW?

In what regulation (please quote) that only police of a certain rank can ask to see your passport?

If you cannot provide an official RTP website quote I will continue to state that it was a stupid post!

If you prove me wrong not only will I openly appologise but I am sure the whole AN community will thank you when they tell an RTP person of a certain rank that they cannot ask for my/their passport!!
