You people vastly underestimate the power of american consumerism. Thailand is toast

How many people here know what the U.S. exports here or the main things that the U.S. exports to them?.

The main thing that the U.S. exports is petroleum products like LNG and fuel.  While the main thing thais export is computer equipment and rubber for tires.

36% sounds like and is a lot but then again, when the country you are charging has already been charging tht amount for your products, it is not so bad.

Thailand does not have tariffsto protect businesses from the big bad Americans;; it uses tariffs to cut down on the amount of taxes the elite have to pay to keep the country running.

The solution is simple lower the tarriffs on things.  First, it will make petroleum products cheaper for Thais, and the wine and spirits market and drinkers will thank you. also

Hellit willl even help tourism.

..."Our friends were worse than our enemies in that regard" probably explains why Russia (or Israel) isn't on Trump's list of Traffis then doesn't it?

"Thailand can have all the friends... they will get burned 100%," kind of like they have now by America?

It will be interesting to see the additional tariffs, which will now likely come on a huge range of American exports by all the countries that have had tariffs on them now.....and then trump will raise tariffs in return, and then the cycle repeats and no one becomes wealthy.

So ironic that in 2018 Trump signed a FTA with Canada and Mexico that he described (in his own words) as "the greatest deal ever!!"  So great in fact that he has done a complete U-turn and applied tariffs to Mexico and Canada.

Good luck America you are sure gonna need it with an oversized,  badly dressed Cheeto running your country and acting like he is the King of America.

For Canada and Mexico, the existing fentanyl/migration IEEPA orders remain in effect, and are unaffected by this order. This means USMCA compliant goods will continue to see a 0% tariff, non-USMCA compliant goods will see a 25% tariff, and non-USMCA compliant energy and potash will see a 10% tariff. In the event the existing fentanyl/migration IEEPA orders are terminated, USMCA compliant goods would continue to receive preferential treatment, while non-USMCA compliant goods would be subject to a 12% reciprocal tariff.

No tariffs applied for Canada and Mexico on goods that are USMCA compliant

All the usual Pearl clutchers are out in force this morning..

You've all claimed to know so much about Trump and seen how he does business, but today youre all running around squawking like chickens.... AGAIN.

All countries  that import/export with the US have known since 20th Jan that he was going to implement some form of tariffs... should have held some negotiations, I guess now he's set them this will happen.

Oof. Thats gonna hurt for thailand losing the american consumer. Maybe they should drop their tariffs against the US

Thailand imposes tariffs on American cars that vary depending on the type of vehicle. For passenger cars, the tariff rate is 80%, while for pickup trucks, it's 60%. So what's with only 36%???

For years, Thailand has imposed high tariffs on imported cars to protect its local car industry. These import taxes can be as high as 80%, which adds a huge amount to the price of foreign vehicles.

For example, a car priced at 720,000 baht ($20,000) in another country can balloon to 1.3 million baht or more due to these tariffs.

On top of that, excise taxes based on engine size and emissions are applied, along with a 7% VAT (Value Added Tax) on the car’s total cost, including import duties and excise taxes. Additional charges like registration fees, road tax, and customs processing fees further inflate the final price.

High car prices in Thailand are primarily due to import taxes and local taxes. Import duties can range from 187% to 328% depending on engine size, significantly inflating the cost of foreign vehicles.

https://thethaiger.com/guides/automotive/why-are-cars-so-expensive-in-thailand

Import tariffs are only the starting point when you add all the other taxes the final total is much higher

In 2018 there was a proposal to cut the import tariff on finished car from 80% to 40%.

The statement came on the heels of a recent proposal made by the Independent Car Importer and Distributor Association, asking the Ministry of Finance to cut the import tariff on finished car from 80% to 40%. Somsak Sriratanaprapas, the association's chairman, was quoted in Thai media as saying the tariff should be as in other countries in the region to secure a level playing field both for local auto manufacturers as well as importers.

"We want to see a realistic tariff rate that allows all parties to compete freely in a fair game," Somsak was quoted as saying. He argued that local auto makers have been well-protected by the unrealistic high duty for more than 30 years and it should be the right time to reduce the tariff. Somsak added that the ministry is considering the association's proposal.

As a guy from the US that used to live in Thailand. The writing has been on the wall for years. Unfortunally for me it means I will never visit or spend money in Thailand again. The good old days have been over for a long time. This just basically stopped all tourism  to Thailand from the US.

Only thing I am grateful for is I am gone. It is going to get pretty bad for the expats living there from the US.

I dodged that bullet.. hahaha

Doormat?

What is the source of your woeful inferiority complex, and how is POTUS going to help what clearly Darwinism left out?

I never felt like a doormat. I was able to become a multimillionaire before age 30, and then I got really wealthy when I moved into private industry. I don't think the average Thai was holding me back nor stepping on me, nor did the average Thai have anywhere near the opportunities I had.

I do know my country greatly benefited from having 30% of its deficit funded by willing foreign UST buyers. I suspect that is going to slow, maybe even stop. With such a capricious clown as POTUS, I doubt many non-US companies will bother to spend the next few years designing and building US factories in a hope of getting behind the tariffs, because few would think POTUS wouldn't block them and even domestically tariff them if the US economy slowed, saying something like, "They're not really American". As soon as arriving ships and planes unload and the goods enter the US market, the average American is going to face price inflation on a scale never seen before. To rub salt in the wounds, Americans are also going to take big hits to their 401Ks, thanks to the "really stable genius".

There used to be a lot of give and take in the world. Despite tariffs in other markets, the US economy did pretty well and the people of the US were able to live well beyond their means. The world rushed to the US' defense after 9-11, and the US was the first major nation---under the leadership of the Biden Administration---to emerge from Covid, growing from 2021-2025 at 3 times the rate of the average G7. It seems all those foreign tariffs neither got in the way of growth nor made the US a doormat.

George Santayana must have known who Mr. Smoot and Mr. Hawley were, but clearly POTUS knows none of the three.

Sure you are pal, an american multimillionaire living in thailand with extreme trump derangment. Leftists never lie about anything

You should replace the batteries in your sarcasm detector.

We can all Google things, so don't try to make out you knew everything the US/TH trade beforehand.

I regularly drive along the eastern seaboard/industrial zones and fish sauce is not a highlight.

I know German brands like Grohe or Schaeffler car parts that have shifted production to Thailand.

The harddisk business is well known since a shortage crisis although shrinking now.
