Again:

Drop the abnormal 300% import tax on cars.

That hurts thai people even harder. They build the parts here, send them overseas and import the car at a huge markup. I hope these tariffs wake countries up and they start diversifying their economies away from manufacturing cheap garbage to export to America. Countries that set themselves up like that besides China all stay poor because they're currencies and wages need to stay low or the corporation ups and leaves to the next slave pit.

Whats the Thai tarrif on wine these days? ah 54% and 300% on cars, but nobody ever calls them out on this

Supposedly, if the price of the wine is less than 1000 baht, there is no tariff.  That's why we see so many wines that cost 999 baht.  Still, there most by some other explanation for the crazy markups.  Other taxes?

War Room???

They couldn't organize a p!ss up on Soi 4!

The Don.

360 billion THB that they estimate tariffs will cost Thailand won't be easy to get but since in Thai eyes that's caused by farang, it will be farang that will pay for it. And there are many places where they can hurt you badly if they wish to, Bob.

No. You did not know who they were when you wrote in the MAGA style, of making a generalization, and hoping no one would question the  narrative.

Educate me and everyone else. The large numbers of countries should be easy to name for you, so just educate us.

European Union nations have been enforcing absurd VAT rates at 20 to 21% for years, added to import duty rates and thus creating inflation for it's own. Trump in plainly retaliating to what Europe and Asian countries have been doing. Why should the USA charge a minimal import duty on imported stuff, when all the other countries are overcharging with excessively high import duty and VAt rates ? Thailand is no exception.

If anybody is to blame, it's the corrupt policies within the European Union and many other countries in the world. Trump is plainly functionning on a tit-for-tat basis. I don't agree with everything he does or says but he is doing the right thing to protect his own and now destroy his country like Europe is doing.

You do not understand what a Value Added Tax is do you?

Countries with a VAT methodology are more likely to have a fair consumptipn tax system.

The USA doesn't have a VAT tax, but most of the world does and it results in societal benefits. In effect the USA is  angry that the world moved to a more equitable tax system.

My memory is very bad on this subject, so can anyone remember what happened with beer Lao and how Thailand managed to get around the ASEAN free trade area? They found a way round it to keep the price high. I wouldn't be surprised to see some clever tax labeling to 'reduce' the taxes on American products.

Do you mean to say that a VAT is a progressive tax that is more on the rich and less on the poor?

I'm in Thailand and I buy wine anyway, even though the price is sort of ridiculous.  California wine that would cost $11 in the USA is 1000 baht here.  I can see a little bit for shipping, but 1000m baht per bottle?  Oh well.

Someday, I'm going to price some really good wine and see what it costs.

With you on this one I like a glass of red myself and some of my favourites are from EU countries how 1-2k baht can be justified on a bottle that would cost me 6-7 pounds in the UK haven't got a clue.

read earlier that Vietnam already removed their tariffs in response to this.

They reduced not removed tariffs.

For LNG, the import tariff rate would be reduced from 5% to 2%, while the tariff on imported cars would be slashed from 64% to 32%. Ethanol tariffs would be reduced from 10% to 5%.

What are they going to do.  Rise their own tariffs from 72% and take them even higher to "Show Trump A Thing Or Two!"  I guess the days of screwing the US with tariffs are over, and heck, he only hit them with 1/2 of the tariffs that they impose on the US.  Imagine if Trump raised tariffs on Thailand to match Thailand's average of 72% on US goods?

Exactly what he should do... like for like on all products from Thailand

And 200%-300% on any imported cars from Thailand.

Thailand faces a major economic challenge as US President Donald Trump announced a 36% tariff on Thai imports. Dr. Santitarn Sathienthai, a member of Thailand’s Monetary Policy Committee, suggests the urgent creation of a “war room” to tackle the potential economic fallout.

Posting on Facebook, Dr. Santitarn, an adviser to the Thailand Development Research Institute, described the tariffs as an economic "earthquake" with severe global aftershocks. Many countries could erect tariff barriers, leading to deteriorating global trade.

The American market has become restrictive, making exports difficult. Consequently, countries, including Thailand, are keen to shift focus to other markets, intensifying competition. Goods from other regions might flood Thailand, complicating the economic landscape.

Although Vietnam faces a steeper 46% tariff, the Thai economy might see delayed investment from Chinese firms avoiding the US-China trade conflict. Negotiations could alter tariff levels, but the uncertainty is causing worldwide business hesitation, impacting investment immediately.

Dr. Santitarn warns that Trump's tariffs may impact Thailand's economy more than anticipated. He called for an urgent “war room” involving public and private sectors to strategize and mitigate risks. Businesses must adapt their strategies to identify opportunities amidst the crisis, as the economic impact might extend over the long term, reported Thai News Room.

Thais live in LA LA LAND they believe the world looks at them with some type of  reverence and its more like they laugh at them as been a joke.

The are not the sharpest tools in the shed as we know but think they are?

But they are  very good at getting money for doing nothing so not that stupid 😂

Thais have Double standards always have its ok for them but  not for others.

Thailand is sinking  fast, since 2020 to now its going backwards at a rate of knots all due to political stupidity  remember do first then think is the Thai motto.

But what the Thais will do is totally the opposite they will raise tariffs on the USA  imports not reduce.

Thailand charges overall 72% tariff on imports from USA.  In 2024, the US goods trade deficit with Thailand was $45.6 billion, a 11.7% increase from 2023, with U.S. goods imports from Thailand totaling $63.3 billion.  Thailand had a $35.4 billion trade surplus with the United States in 2023.  Reciprocal Tariff is only 36% from the USA.

They're already are several war rooms I don't know why they need to form one they're already is a few built around the city.

I been i the wine business over 40 years, the lower end wines are like 4x the price here but once you start spending like 3000 baht a bottle the prices are almost the same as USA, I think only because importer are declaring the values low and paying taxes based on a $10 bottle not a $100 bottle
