Not the sharpest of threads really…

Why humour them? Clearly a previously banned member mixing things up. I just don't get why someone would spend so much time trying to wind people up instead of drinking beer and speaking to nice women.

To me it’s the Buddhist way of thinking everything is fate therefore far less critical thinking were as in the western world we feel we have a greater influence/opportunity to influence our fate.therfore far more critical thinking and complaining.

Why can't farangs be more like Thais?

probably the growing up in a Buddhist land that has different values. We tend to be more serious about things like our work etc... in Thai language they use the English word 'serious' - everyone understands the word but there is no positive connotation for the word serious. They tend to live more in the present moment with less anxiety.

Sure, I can go on but then you might learn something about the culture and how and why the people are different.

Because farangs went too far into the reflection that they became nevrotic.

Thai stays on the surface only, so its sabai sabai. Its head in the sand.

Both attitude have goods and bad outcomes. Depending on perspective.

The topic was Thais vs white people wasn't it.

So, unless you put all Asians into the Thai category...

Farangs often prefer structure and predictability, while Thais embrace fluidity and living in the moment. The "wee wah" (ambulance siren) symbolizes life's unpredictability, reminding us not everything follows a plan. Thais adapt to chaos, while farangs struggle to let go. Songkran is where these worlds collide, with both swept into the same flow. As the rain season nears, it's a reminder to prepare, but also to accept that some things, like the weather, can't be controlled.

Dave moaning about wannabes, with a amulet on 😆

His main complaint about so-called farang wannabes is their attempt to learn the language.

Every time I have encountered feelings of resentment from foreign men about other foreign men speaking Thai, the root of the resentment has always been jealousy and insecurity. This has been particularly true when the Thai wife is present, and even truer when the Thai wife's English proficiency is limited, as another foreigner speaking Thai is an unwelcome reminder of how the language barrier limits the quality of the communication between the couple.

Anyone who has achieved a high level of proficiency in the language knows how much effort it takes to acquire that proficiency, and ought to welcome the opportunity to evaluate another foreigner's proficiency, and perhaps exchange tips on ways to improve further. They also ought to be able to easily relate to and be indulgent when another person takes pleasure in demonstrating a skill which required a tremendous amount of time and hard work to obtain.

Furthermore, anyone who has achieved a high level of proficiency in the language would know how much goodwill language skills generate with Thai people, and would encourage every effort made by foreigners to learn the language, and never attempt to stigmatize or make people feel self-conscious for having made the effort.

In Thailand one is always better off to avoid having any dealing with the foreigners here. When it comes to cheating other foreigners, often had the worst experience when the falang contactor shows up with his expectant thai wife/assistant-mia noi and pretends to know all about the job. If one has to get cheated with contractors (and you will be as a foreigner) might as well get cheated by a Thai with Thai prices and not some upstart falang cheating the naive westerner for the job and over inflated prices for the work.

Of course this is only a basic opinion based on experiences or peer feedbacj and obviously must not be generalized as to say they are all like this or that.

Nice click-bait topic from someone who should know better. Why do you assume all foreigners are the same and that what you say applies to all? Many expats live harmoniously in their local environment and get along with the locals without any drama. Sounds like you are living in the scumbag places where you get moron tourists, rather than expats that just want to live out their lives somewhere cool.

Put simply most tourists behave well, a few don't.

Thais - fun, fun, fun

Farangs - whinge, whinge, whinge

Why can't farangs be more like Thais?

Because many that come to Thailand are attempting to escape a pitiful existence of their own making. Unfortunately is the cause is yourself you cant escape it by going to another country.

Mass killing of children seems to be a thing in some, well at least one, western country, so rather dangerous.

It would be wrong to say Thais are snow white when it comes to prejudice or mumbling under the breath. When Tiger Woods was offered a free Thai passport, he turned it down because of how his mother was treated when she had a black husband.

The right leaning mindset on full display.  You love to use a single parameter to explain complicated matters.  Otherwise, it's just too complex for you.

Google is saying your comment about Tiger Woods is misinformation.

There is no public information or evidence to suggest that Woods ever declined the Thai citizenship offered to him.

It has long been my observation that white foreigners who are eager to falsely portray Thais as virulently racist towards black people are usually projecting their own prejudices in an effort to legitimize and normalize them.

It was even in Asean Now at the time! https://aseannow.com/topic/8980-dual-citizen-tiger-woods/

I was here at the time and remember it clearly.

I have my doubts about Thais and the Buddhist way of thinking.

In my experience Thais are as inattentive as Christians as far as theological/philosophical concepts.

I've asked Thais about the nature of different Buddhist holidays and get a blank look and answer

"it's Buddha day".

"Everything is fate", my impression is the average Buddhist thinks about that about as much as the average "Christian" thinks about the difference between the Protestant and Catholic theology of the eucharist.

In other words, not at all.

Google is now far from being a reliable source...even before they cosied up to the WEF  and the trusted news initiative  to put  "approved"  answers at the top of the results pages  instead of the most searched for and viewed results.

You will find two items that conflict on Google:

1. Tiger Woods was granted Thai citizenship,

2. Tiger Woods does not hold dual citizenship.

The government offered and he refused.

@Purdey Show me evidence to support your contention. A comment on a 20 year old ASEANNOW thread unattributed to any source is not evidence.

@johng It must be nice to live in a world where you can discount anything you choose not to believe. I envy you. Not.

You are free to believe anything  google and the legacy media tells you to belive

totally up to you,  I chose not to believe a lot of what they are peddling because they have been proven to be untrustworthy and manipulative on a large range of subjects...Google itself admits even boasts to  pushing "approved" answers to the top of its search results, that's not what  a search engine is supposed to be doing  that is manipulation of the results.
