Without going into detail I live similarly to how I would if I was retired in a place like Ames, Iowa that lacks very much that I actually would be tempted to spend a lot on (such as Broadway shows, etc.).

But here --

No need for a car or bike

No need for long pants or even socks and regular shoes

Delivery of everything a bargain rather than a rip off

No snow

Modern condo 300m from Jomtien Beach = 7,000 THB rent/month (top floor, outside balcony)

Traditional wooden house in 1 rai of land in the hills north of Chiang Mai = 4,000 THB/month (for my radio hobby!)

Vios car = 8,000 THB rent/ month

Medical insurance ($100,000) = 6,000 THB/month

 

That makes 25k THB and still 12k THB left over from my reduced UK pension....

We are talking about the example of a Australian or UK pensioner on his country old age pension of around 40-45 baht a month who if he can live in that amount in Sydney or Sheffield can he live in that amount in Pattaya?

When i lived in surin years ago in the house i build for only 350.000 baht i could spend as little as 5000 baht a month.Of course a quiet life then.Stayed home everyday and we had rise and chicken and pigs.

BUT I have spend alot more on a funny nigth in Bangkok.I get a barbill about 70k for one night.I rang the bell several times but that was my choice.My pension is good.I get about 125 k a month.(baht)

Sometimes i take 2 weeks just relaxing and don't go to bars.Sometimes visit thai friends and other times they visit me Then we share bills.

A Aussie pensioner /UK pensioner would have FREE health care in their own country 

 

Thats where that budget can be eaten in Thailand 

No way around it UNLESS you can make the trip back to your own country if illness happens

If you can live off that much in Sydney, then you can live better in Pattaya based on cash flow.

Yes, you can live on ฿40k, although, you have to be married to qualify for a long term visa on that amount.

Don't know about JT but ......

I went out cycling this morning for an hour (22km).

Then came home and played Civilization VI until lunchtime.

Watched that new movie starring Milla Jokavich.

Cooked roast pork and baked potato with gravy for lunch.

Nearly 3pm now, and almost no money spent!

I would have no intention to live on 40K a month.  I very much doubt that I could.  My average expenditure per month is at least double that and I neither drink alcohol, smoke, or frequent bars.

a bit of a silly statement as you had to buy the food at one time, pay the utilities and presumably, pay for whatever you drink.  We can all go one day without spending anything, its what you spend in a month that is being asked.

There's a very well stocked gym near here that is 30 baht for as long as you want. You scan a QR Code to pay, so I guess Australians could just pretend to scan it. Either way I doubt it would break the bank. I'm not sure using a gym is fully advisable for pensioners.

Pork joint about 80bht which will last 3-4 meals.

Potatoes free from a neighbour (6-10kg) been eating them the past 4 weeks.

Tea is around 2bht/day for as much as I can drink (Tata gold 500gm 170bht lasts 4 months)

Electricity free, I have solar panels.

 

Walk, have a swim or cycle around, cook your own food from basics, download your books, movies, music, games and you'll spend a fraction of your pension.
