If you are a long term UK expat you won't be on 40k a month. Mine was frozen 8 years ago and being contracted out in the UK i only get 26k a month, forever. Couldn't live on that.

So how do you survive?

Don't English teachers in Bangkok and Phuket choose to live there on such an income?

Or would their life be considered subsistence existence?

If a 40 year old would choose to do it in Phuket while also paying rent, I'd guess a 70 year old with no rent can do it in Pattaya.

Some or many do live on that.  But many things are left out.  The younger people have no health insurance but many of them still are under the wings of their parents back in their home country.  The older ones have no health insurance and are just rolling the dice because they have no choice.

Australian aged pension: Currently 21700  baht per fortnight @ 26 pa equals 564200 baht equals 47000 baht per month. I aspire to 25 baht per $A  so the following figures would apply: 26875 per fortnight 698750 pa 58229 per month.

I'm not of that age, or of those meagre means, but imagine that 1,000 a day average for an older bloke with all assets owned, visa funds in the bank, a comfortable home in their name is okay, if they're a bit of a homebody.

Say, weekdays relaxing at home with restaurant delivery for 500 per day, meeting friends in parks, at the beach, a cafe, then 4-5000 baht weekends would be comfortable for 70 year olds that are settled here and aren't interested in fat 50 year old bargirls. What do they need, one happy ending massage per week, per month?

YMMV

Simple if you leave health care insurance, electricity, internet, new clothes now and then, motorcycle/car expenses, cleaning products and toiletry, ... out of the equation.

So if old Reg from Yorkshire can live on that in Sheffield why can't old Reg live in Pattaya on that ?

Oh please stop being so negative

You seem to be forgetting that old Reg in Sheffield has no medical expenses, even prescriptions are free  for the elderly.

The other significant factor is having to pay rent or living rent free.

There is very little in the way of like for like comparison.

There is no comparison at the moment with the aud$ scraping dregs, In Australia it cost me less than in Thailand,  I breath clean air, near a beach with clean water, cook my own food, no gmo's, yes i have a gf 😀,  no 90 day reporting, no visa, free medical, follow a keto diet and exercise regularly 😀

Same old topic again"you can't live in Thailand unless you won the euro millions nonsense," Yes you can. I am quite comfortable on my 40k per month living in our house and growing veggies on our small piece of land. And I have my daily intake of Mr Leo when I want.Do I worry about money?

No. Only those who have money, worry about money.

Quite.  I have my own home and quite comfortable on about 30K/month. Health is on a pay as you go basis, when I can't pay I will go, already well into extra time.

I like his question, it's worthy of a posting.

It beats Bob, Lewie and all the other postings

I like his question too. Are you feeling stressed today, by any chance?

You were only contacted out because you had another pension.

It was quite scandalous that a certain segment of the UK population could put part their NI contributions into a occupational/private pension that would be index linked worldwide.

My wife and I have a house in a rural place in West Thailand. If we were given a monthly income of 40,000 Baht we would have no clue how to spend so much. We eat simply and healthily. Even with the (small) expenses of looking after 25 rescued cats, we spend very little because we grow a lot of our home food, and because local prices are low here.

But if you live in Pattaya, Bangkok, or another city in Thailand your expenses will be high because of rent, travel, food, beer, entertainment, health expenses resulting from city life, etc. Nevertheless, 40,000 Baht is easy to live on.

What about paying for health problems on that income? If you go to private hospitals, no. Government hospitals, yes. If you have been eating processed (supermarket) food for a long time, you will have health problems on the way resulting from your diet, if not already. Processed food is so harmful to the body. If you live simply and healthily, and you don't ruin your body with alcohol, your expenses can be very low. 40,000 Baht per month is a lot!

It all depends on the variable amount of funding available to each individual, in Pattaya or anywhere else. Some will happily get by on their basic pension and adjust their lifestyle accordingly. Others, with more available income, may run more than two homes, employ several staff, and will incur major maintenance costs re swimming pools, house maintenance etc. Then there will be those with substantial incomes but who prefer a modest life style, and others with less substantial incomes but who live beyond their means. Accordingly there can be no definitive answers to the questions put by the poster.

Without Booze, Bars and Women it's easy to live on 40k.,    Or; you can be like one of my Old Friends, skint every day and hoping his Pals will buy him the odd Beer and/or Meal,   Nowhere to live he can call his own place to rest and no Dosh to get back home,      Sad state of affairs but have to say people get theirselves into such situations often.
