How come they don't understand that week-long water throwing is actually bad for business?

There is more to life for Thais than profit, which is a hard concept for capitalists, I know

I don't think  7-11 CP owners would agree with you ....

Most don't lose profit because they either charge for the water or you have to buy a drink.  I don't remember seeing any less people in bars or walking street.  Same for nana lots of people lots of drinking.

Most bars accept it as the cost of doing business

Lot of restaurants have to close for a week in Pattaya.  They lose business.

This year I'm off to Jakarta for 10 days. A good use of Thai Airways miles that were to expire soon.

Sunday. When exactly do they start throwing water in Pattaya? Tomorrow (Saturday?). I nearly got doused today in Soi Post Office. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't at it already this very evening.

The holiday is theirs only, they deserve to be proud of it

The Buddhist New Year is actually celebrated in several countries and in no way belongs to Thailand.

When people get soaked in water, they don't go into restaurants, bars or clubs. And many avoid going out altogether! Either way, businesses lose a lot of money.

How is it possible to be so stupid and not understand this?

It's a religious festival.  The Buddhist New Year.

This is like asking why businesses close for Christmas and New Year in the West.

Is it religious?  Some people might go the temple, but it's not one of the Buddhist holidays.  More of a cultural festival with religious influences, especially from Buddhism, but not a purely religious event.

"In Bangkok, the Buddhist New Year, also known as Songkran, is celebrated annually for three days, from April 13th to 15th. This festival is a major cultural event in Thailand, celebrated with traditional water fights, visits to temples, and other rituals."

(From the AI blurb in Google.)

It's a religious festival.  How many people go to church on Christmas day in the West?  Hardly anyone, but we still know that it is a religious festival.

The water throwing typically stops by nightfall anyway. Songkran in many places is 3 days only  anyway.

Typically the water throwing  goes on all night for the 7 days in Pattaya!💦

Kind of hard to stay open when idiots walk into the restaurant and spray people and the food with water.  Or when people can't come into your place without being dripping wet.  But hey per you loss of business on them.  🙄

Whatever it is in Pattaya it isn't the same as other parts of Thailand.  it is ruined by the idiot falangs.  And it runs for 7 or more days.

Ok. but Pattaya is a foreign tourist hub. Many of the tourists are in Pattaya for the festival.

Thailand has already hosted a month-long Songkran festival. So how exactly does Songkran negatively affect the economy? In case you didn’t know the total tourism revenue from both domestic and international tourists during Songkran 2023 was approximately 18.5 billion baht. That was the year Thailand celebrated Songkran for the entire month.

Everything isn't about business and there is nothing to understand. This is Thailand and the Thais love Songkran.

How so?

Why not visit Pattaya while it's going on and report back?  Or read back several posts that describe the antics that take place there during Song Kran.  Not sure repeating them will make a difference.

Many years ago it mostly stopped soon after sunset..... Pattaya has gone it's own way since on this celebration.

No word-bending intended.

So Song Kran is a Thai New Year celebration, celebrated differently in tourist areas, mostly by stupid tourists, encouraged by stupid Thai, usually girls. Am I correct please?

And now you change your info nd want somebody to admit you are right. How pathetic!
